Thanks TS - and firstly may I say I'm very thankful you did not go to 100k - as I would have bailed at 50K. I also heard that Mr Ferraris was intending to bid on her as he trained the elder sibling, Fleeing South who won a couple of races, but somehow got held up or side-tracked and missed her when she was in the ring - so everything fell into place for me.

Secondly, congrats on Zeeno but isn't this pedigree business strange - Asylum's dam Running North was by Northfields by Northern Dancer and Zeeno of course out of a dam by Northern Guest by Northern Dancer - so one could sort of deduce that the Northern Dancer line 'clicks' with Count du Bois; however I'm sure you know that many others bred along these lines have flopped - including some full sublings to Zeeno like Power Flow - so well done on picking the right one. Running North for that matter was never sent to Count du Bois again as far as I know (unless the foal went missing somehow), but it would have been interesting to see what a full sibling to Asylum Seeker would have achieved - maybe Muhti can comment?

I have told the Asylum Seeker story in great detail in a letter to the Sporting Post (in 2007 I think), but for those that are interested (wave to Bad Company), maybe just a shortened version:

I went to the 2005 National Two Year Old sale with Patrick Kruyer intending to buy something - there was a couple on my shortlist that went for too much money, but then we came to lot 264, a Caesour filly out of a Danehill mare that I really liked - bid up to 70k (if memory serves) but lost her to Corne Spies (I seem to remember) who bought her for 85k (or somewhere close to that) - she was called Dane Julia ::o

After losing DJ I was quite upset, parted ways with Patrick and on the way out walked into Roy Magner (who had trained a few for a RA syndicate still formed by Graeme Hawkins - both Elvis and myself was part of this 'First Look' syndicate); we chatted a bit and I told him about losing out on DJ and he asked if there was something else that I was interested in; I went back to my list and saw that I had marked lot 296 as a possibility - but I had not seen her up to that stage; we went to the Wilgerbosdrift draft and took Asylum out of her box - she was nothing out of the ordinary, a little chubby, but Roy checked her out and gave her a clean sheet - so we had a go and as luck would have it, got her

Even after a few weeks of work, she remained a bit chubby and remained so even after having been worked quite hard - eventually Roy got the vet out to make sure that she was not in foal ::o which thankfully she was not - so he worked her some more - during this time I was trying to sell 25% of her (I had 50% and Elvis 25%) but could not find a buyer - until John Wright saw her in the stable newsletter and took the 25%

I stilll remember a misty December morning (much like today in fact) that she went through the pens and the work rider informed us that she was 'very nice'; so Roy nominated her over 1000 at the inside Turf track and she drew one - so he decided to leave her in - this was right towards the end of the year. And she won - going away - to some loud cheering from the Magner table and stunned silence elsewhere.

She then went on to win the Nursery (after losing to another Count du Bois filly called Ethics in the Ruffian) and we entered her for the Golden Slipper - we all went down to Greyville on July Day and was over the moon when she won again - Roy only told us afterwards that she had worked against a moderate maiden in the week and was soundly beaten ::o

The offers were starting to come, but we held out and entered her in the 2 yr old Fillies race over 1600 at Clairwood (Ethekwini I think) where she drew 16 out of 16 and still finished 4th - and would in my biased opinion have won had she not got a bad bump around the turn.

We then sold her on to an Aussie agent - and she moved to Cape Town - but here she was just another good filly in a stable of stars and she did not win again before being taken out of the country to Aus, where she had a couple of starts and then in 2010 had a foal by Rock of Gibraltar - I see she is still listed on the Aussie TBA site, but I am not aware of any other foals since.

But as you say TS; it really is a fantastic experience (and of course financially rewarding) to be involved with horses of this calibre - the challenge remains to find the 'next one' (tu)

Awesome Frodo(tu), i think that sometimes horses find people and then proceed to change their lives.

I had shares in Fairy Queen who ran second in the Alan Robertson two years later, i had nothing to do with choosing her but sometimes they find you......

Waiting for the next one to show him/herself......................

I was at varsity in 1979. Two of my buddies and I decided to go down to Durbs for the July. We took our suits, got hold of top hats and umbrellas. We studied form and decided Beau Art was the horse. We arrived in Durbs the Friday afternoon before the race.
After quite a battle we booked into a bug invested room with 3 single beds.
We had very little money. That night we wandered into the amusement park. I came across the "red, blue and white" table. You had to place a bet, then roll the ball. If it lands on your colour you double your money. White was 2/1.
Luck was on my side that night, I think I only lost about one out of ten rolls. As students are we were very loud, soon we had a large gathering, not only supporting, but playing behind us.
The one out of ten that we lost brought up a cry of "you can't win them all, thank god for that" from the owner.
We were about R3000 up when the owner decided enough is enough. He closed down.
Later on we sauntered into a pub on a corner opposite the park. Some of our "friends" followed and the beer flowed.
In the pub everyone discussed the July. We broadcasted our "winner" Beau Art.
A journalist joined our group and preached Over the Air as the winner. As rowdy students are we argued with him.
At the July, suited and top hatted with brolly we played small in the first races losing everyone. Before the main race we "brainstormed"
Beau Art was the reason we came down. We will back him. But the journalist made an impression. We decided to split our money, just keeping enough for the fuel for the return journey.
We got 12/1 on Over the Air. WE made more than 12 grand.
Beau Art won the next year.

Funny that I was attracted to both your horses but for different reasons.....I was first interested in in the Hallmark colt Fleeing South as sired in Zim I thought he would go cheap about R30K at local TBA sale...when Old Uncle Ormond pushed up the bid I thought he was crazy, but then he at a earlier time went for a horse I liked to named Sabina Park.....Fleeing South was not as good as his price tag ....a break even after wins places and keep....then I get a big heads up by Robbie Knuppe about a 1st season sire called Count Dubois and see he has covered Fleeing South's sibling....the alarm bells start ringing.....at the time I did not know if the ped was workable as I was still fine tuning some of my theory but I really liked it.....similar with Zeeno...liked an earlier full sibling named Inglewood on a Cape Sale TBA then....Kantor got it back at R170K....so when I see Zeeno in the sales catalogue a year later.... I ask my racing partner at the time to get his trainer to look at it...as I was away on a business trip....I get a message it looks like a mule....::o....I now check them myself because there was nothing mulish about him at all.....:S
