now how would such a rule work? Surely you cannot give a horse a favourable draw at the expense of the other horses? If the draws are random then by placing a horse in a favourable barrier position you are giving that horse an unfair advantage(or including it in the final field because the trainer has had to scratch because of the bad draws)? I don't know about this rule but I do sympathize with the owner of this horse.

There is no such rule like this, but I guess we as normal patrons don't know what's happening behind the scenes.

We have queried this with NRB ( who handle races, draws, jockeys etc) and Phumelela and been shown their "SABS certificate" that ensures that draws are random but still it seems impossible for the same horse to draw so badly so many times.

We will however check with NHA if there is any rule change as above....

You say rule was in place and Titch says new rule to be implemented. Rule or no rule it will bother anyone involved with racing, be it owners/trainers or punters.

What noone can tell you, however is...

A do they start the draws by trainer alphabetically?
B do they start the draws by horse alphabetically?
C do they do it like they do the major races?

Oscar I think there may be a rule implemented where they are guaranteed a certain draw if they have had a bad draw for a certain number of times and the horses that are inconvienianced by this rule will in turn benefit when they too have had a run of bad draws, I thought when first hearing about the proposal that there would be many hurdles to overcome not sure if it is in force yet but I know for sure that it was being considered late last season...

Array Of Stars is proof that no matter how they are currently doing the draws it is flawed and have put paid to her Jan campaign...now you have to keep her at her best until she cracks a draw..Bud Boy had the same prob at one stage, and his last start the draw no doubt cost him a win...one way or another it has to be revisited..puts a whole new spin on the old adage "luck of the draw"

I think that rule would easily be challenged in court as that would be manipulation of a race and the other horses in the race would be disadvantaged(unlike the case where in Maidens certain horses are given a run ahead of others, this is a case where a good draw would favour an entrant above the other horses) - Imagine a horse going five wide draws in a row and then the rule is implemented and the horse gets given a plum draw in a Gr1 at Greyville - I cannot agree with this rule as it makes a mockery of the randomness of the draw -
If i were the NHRA i would set up a web cam and do the draws that way so that any owner/trainer could see there is no manipulation or set up a fictional field with the same horses and draw three times and allow that to be televised - I have no idea if the draws have any flaws or not but perhaps in the interest of transparency it could be done a few times ?

Is there any other trainers that are on this site with more training experience?
