The worst feeling is when one of your horses is sick and then gets euthanized - It's different when you are a punter as you don't have the guilt that you put that horse in that position - The best feeling is watching your horse win or run well or seeing him in training progress from a yearling to a mighty racehorse.

This is very cheap if you owning the horse outright!

Being part owner in a few was one of the best experiences of my life - yes it is expensive, but I would encourage anyone who have some extra cash availabe to try it - but make sure it is money that you can afford to lose and would have spent anyway on some other form of 'entertainment'.

For me it starts off with picking your own at the sales - very much like finding that 20/1 shot that most others ignore - I'm biased to a dam that has at least produced something and try to look for established 'crosses' - however having said that, I picked Asylum Seeker almost by default, as at that time there certainly was no 'proof' that Count Dubois would work with a Northfields mare.

Then you have the highs and lows - as Mr H says the worst is when your pride and joy has to be euthanized - we were part of a syndicate that owned a filly by Special Preview called First Look - made her first start as a juvenile - the word was out and she started at 8/10 - Figgy up - unfortunately 'no jumping' and she lost 8 lenghts at the start - won next time out though, She then ran 3rd in one for the juvenile features and we were looking forward to some good times - in the next week though she was bitten / stung by some insect - contracted something akin to AHS and died an unpleasant death :(

Also when the decision was made to sell Asylum Seeker, she was transferred by the new owners to the Cape, her last run for Roy was in one of the Cape features and we went down to say our good-byes - sad day for all concerned.

Still the best game in town (tu)

This thread brings back lots of memories-unfortunately mostly bad.
When I had a filly in training in Natal I got a vets bill to geld it!
Moved her to Jhb and continued to get vet bills for over a year later!

Many years ago my horse ran a respectable 5 th in its first run-it was running on a Sat in a much stronger maiden and was told we would just be happy with more experience.
I went to the course with my trainer and when we got there the horse had been backed strongly (3 claims)-I know that my trainer was not trying to shaft me (but someone in the stable was !)-the horse ran 4th.
One thing I learnt during ownership was there is a lot of ducking and diving that does NOT include the trainer or jockey.

Clan what are the average monthly vet fees in PE?
The vet fees will be the deciding factor on where I will place my next horse.
Kzn is definitely out.

Taking out vaccinations which have to be done 4 times a year your vet fees are dependent on the soundness of horses. Also a lot of things you used to be able to do now have to be done by a vet.

We try to cut down on vacs by doing one Fluvac with an AHS vac but it doesn't always work out.

Send it to the shams and you won't even need to bother about vet or training fees

The process doesn't end when the horses finishes racing....

Keeping a jumper in good shape is just as expensive.

for the last 2months ....vet fees to all our owners = 0.... ZERO!!!!!!

most stables shaft their owners ...tooo lazy to treat little niggles or injuries by themselves ....very easy just to call the vet because the owner will pay ....and some trainers even get a kickback from vet.

stable fees also ridiculous in most centres .raging from R5500 - R8000 per month .....that trainer make shitload of money , he does not have to worry about performing ...he makes a very good living with 40+ horses....just of stabling fees

i say bullshit

we train for R3500 per month and will only get a vet out if its life threatening or if treatment can only be done by a vet......and no vet was needed last 2 months

my motto...train to perform ....and if a horse is not good enough tell the owner straight up.

i dont want to waste my time and an owners money.....and my owners know what happens on a daily basis and what races are being planned.

so far so good.didnt lose one owner and gained 5 new owners in last month
and yes we mainly race at kimberley but if a horse is good enough we will not be scared to raid gauteng (that is more than 200km closer than kimberley)
all happy
