Good to put a face to the name Flash. You must also know Wiseowl (Nicky) and David Nieuwerhuisen.

Mr h thanks for your email
Ziets I have worked with horse for longer than most currently do the accounts for a small but successful trainer
Talk to me next year but in the interim as to a breakdown in costs I give you the simple ones
Concentrate 6 to 8 kgs per day at R5 =R30 to R40 = R1000 to R1200 oer month
Bedding about 24 bales per month for a good bed =R480
If you use less then horse will sleep on concrete
thats for starters
You can obviously do it cheaper on a farm but remember 5 to 6 horses per groom but
if you want to win races you have to feed the best nothing else is good enough
NOT my words but those for the great Syd Laird

All that I know is that to hold your own as a Trainer, you cannot cut any corners, as is very well documented and clearly shown by the likes of MDK, Tarry, Bass, Crawford, Drier etc etc etc, with apologies to the many pros out there whom I havent mentioned.
The really top class horses are easy to train, in terms of stable management. The others, invariably take a lot of time and extra effort, thinking, input. Thats a fact of racing.
Tomorrow, Lauren transfers the weekly wages. This morning, I signed off R19238.00 for that. We have 45 horses. Do some simple maths....
We pay our telephones, internet, fax etc. Our vehicles dont run on air and our equipment is in excellent nick, because we are repairing and replacing weekly. Our bedding is clean at all times, we dont have a "droppings corner " in the stable, due to flies and bacteria/ammonia. We allocate 9 bags a week @ R22 per bag, per horse, for refill. Some horses use more, none use less. Do some simple maths....
We feed combinations of Epol, Vuma and Spurwing and we try to get between 8 and 10kg's a day through the manger. We only feed good quality teff, no eragrostis and definitely no poor quality roughage, which forces us to buy in bulk, in advance. At times we have to truck in good quality oat hay from the Cape, whilst we await new cuts of quality teff. Electrolytes are fed daily plus another 3 or 4 supplements, including Twydil. Our medical room is well stocked for all emergencies and also for all incidentals such as speedy cuts or joint treatments etc etc. Do the simple maths....
As for equipment, we have our own scope, two nebulisers, a haygain machine and an equine massage blanket. Every horse has his/her own specific bridle and bit. Every stable has infra red lighting for Winter and all horses have their own blanket for Winter. We pay stable rent and water and lights. On racedays, our grooms are neatly presented and our horses definitely do not look in need of a meal and are proudly presented by the team and dont go to the start so short that they look like they may fall over on the way there.
All of the above plus a lot more is included, in our Training Fees. And it cannot be done for R3500.
And when you set out in this game, the only way to survive is by giving the horses everything they deserve, everything of the best quality, including the grooms.
The parade ring is your showroom. The race is your exam. And those two are the produce of your routines, approach, stable management, extra input, teamwork and knowlege/experience.

And I think that its important to note that there is a very big difference between "stabling" or spelling a horse and training a racehorse.
As for vets, there are forumites who have or have had horses with us. Why not ask them to post about vet bills. We are not special. There are many Trainers just like us out there. My posts on this subject speak for the majority of proper Trainers.

Mick Appleby Racing
The Fees
Our fees are very competitive, and value for money is what we want to give all our clients, Training Fees are from £31.50 per day, we also offer a leading out service from £15.00 per day.
This fee covers the cost of stabling, feed, exercising, grooming and all tack required for the normal care and training of your horse and basic first aid treatment and sundries. There are no gallop fees with us unlike many other trainers.
Also the travelling cost we charge are very reasonable at just £1.15 per mile (FREE TRAVEL TO SOUTHWELL), this needs to be factored into your monthly costs as when your horse/s, is transported to the races then this mileage rate can add up, as you can see we can save you money when it comes to travel.
That's without VAT,which is 20 % on top and without vets fees..
Hate to think what the Stoutes,Gosdens charge.
