In shock news today the fancied Geoff Woodruff-trained Yorker was pulled out of the Vodacom Durban July and the plan to send him overseas has been reverted to.
Derek Brugman, the racing manager of Yorker’s part-owner Markus Jooste, said, “We have always said that we would look at how he was handicapped before deciding to run him. He ran to about a 115 in the Gold Challenge on Saturday and the handicappers didn’t lower him, despite not giving the winner King Of Pain what we believed should be his full rating of 117 and instead giving him only 114. The horses on the shipment to Dubai are all in Johannesburg already and have to be in quarantine by Friday, so the appeals process would not be completed before then.
“Furthermore, last year when we lodged a merit ratings appeal on behalf of two July horses’ (Hill Fifty Four and Whiteline Fever), and were later proven to be correct, the appeal was only heard on the week of the July and we weren’t refunded our deposit. We don’t believe Yorker is good enough to win the July off a 118 so have decided to send him overseas as soon as possible, rather than run a dirty third. He will be on tomorrow’s float from Clairwood to Johannesburg.”
Brugman added that Jooste’s retained jockey Anton Marcus will now ride the champion owner’s only remaining runner, the Woodruff-trained Rake’s Chestnut.

The highlighted should read that he is on the float as we speak (he left Clairwood for Jo'burg today)

If I understand correctly, they were hoping that Yorker's MR would be dropped - but I agree he could have mentioned that in the interview. For me, a bit optimistic to believe that Yorker's rating would be dropped on a run over a trip arguably short of his best; even if he ran to 110 in the Challenge, I don't believe his rating would have dropped ?

Maybe I'm getting something wrong here so please shout if I am.
Would the reason Yorker's rating not being dropped be because he ran well within himself? If it was guaranteed on Thursday last week that Yorker would be heading overseas, I think it's reasonable to expect that he may well have won the Gold Challenge.
Thus, his rating wasn't dropped because everybody knows he can run better than that.
???

I agree that would be the reasoning - not sure if he would have won though - we can't be sure, but I would think that he was prepared with the possibility of running in the July - and therefore would not have been at his peak :S

Re: Re: Yorker

Yes exactly. If the trainer knew before running the Gold Challenge, for a fact that the Gold Challenge WAS going to be his last race, he possibly would have told AM to give it horns because there's no reason to take it easy.....
He may not have won either way but looking at the pace and given KOP's form and ability the margin would at the very least have been much closer if AM had pushed him along. FWIW BB wasn't being ridden that hard either...

"Brugman added that Jooste’s retained jockey Anton Marcus will now ride the champion owner’s only remaining runner, the Woodruff-trained Rake’s Chestnut."

So one would assume Whiteline Fever is also out, as he his part owned by the Jooste's?
