The two best horses in South Africa, stable companions Futura and Legislate, will make Saturday’s R1-million, Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1 600m at Greyville one of the best races of the decade.
Justin Snaith is pitting last year’s Vodacom Durban July winner Legislate against the winner of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and J&B Met winner Futura and at level weights with both being drawn towards the outside, it could be called the match race of all time. Under these conditions, the race should decide which is the better, something that has been the centre of speculation since they first met in the Cape as three-year-olds when Futura was in the Brett Crawford stable.
The two are among the 12 runners that stood their ground for this famous race with the field including the winner of the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes Ice Machine as well as the second and third in that race, Bouclette Top and Ashton Park. Also in the field is the five-year-old No Worries that finished third to Wylie Hall in the Premier’s Champion Challenge at Turffontein.
Thirteen runners will face the starter for the R250 000, Grade 3 Cup Trial, the second race on the card featuring Vodacom Durban July candidates hoping to impress the big race selection panel.
Topping the handicap over 1 800m is the J&B Met runner-up Gold Onyx and Helderberg Blue that finished third as well as the runner-up in the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes Athina from the Gauteng stable of Joe Soma.
Stan Elley’s July candidate Punta Arenas, that ran a great race in the Betting World 1900 to finish third behind his stable companion Dynastic Power, will be hoping to make enough impression to sway the July selection panel to give him another crack at the big race by turning the tables on his stablemate.
Mike de Kock is running the Mogok gelding Wild One that won the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup and placed in both the Gold Vase and the eLan Group Gold Cup at Greyville last year.
The R250 000, Grade 2 Tibouchina Stakes will see the Duncan Howells-trained filly Same Jurisdiction in action against top Cape fillies and mares like Helderberg Blue and Maybe Yes. Same Jurisdiction won the Thekwini Stakes and the Flamboyant Stakes before being beaten from a wide draw in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas and failing by a neck to beat Siren’s Call in the SA Fillies Classic.
The De Kock pair of Ataab and One Fine Day, third and fourth to Alexis in the KRA Fillies Guineas will add spice to a very competitive race.

This is a gelding and is running in the CUP TRIAL not Tibouchina - i presume he means Hammie's Hooker

Will have my eye on No Worries as a roughie going into the july, I think a placing should be enough to see him in the final field..
When you running with the big dogs, u can't piss like a puppy..

It's worth remembering that except for his poor run in the queens plate , which is very obviously not his best form, Legislate was coming off a 5 win in a row streak including 4 g1 races coming into that. Futura was behind him in 2 of those . Not sure that Legislate will be at his best having missed his prep run and not having run since that poor run. Both poor draws but hopefully both will have a clear passage and give us all a race to remember.

Legislate 3.75/1 with Hollywood
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
