exactly my sentiments bdb and pirates. What to do if the management team of a business do not perform - fire the lot? any suggestions??? mass picket/strike?? Who is going to take responsibility, or who should be held accountable rather. And where to from here.

One small point to take in consideration.
I dont think that Phum cares about south african racing.
They already got punting on the global market of the leg and are benefiting.
They dont have to pay towards all the running cost of trainers, racecourses, security etc.
Chris now you can have a go at me: They can run the game like our bookmakers, dont contribute but have according to me the biggest turnover. It doesn't matter to me what percentage they do contribute phum and all the other bodies contribute by far more. Job creations etc.
Nobody can answer me on my question.
How many bookmakers are there in the RSA.
What turnover do they generate combined say on a maiden race at Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal,Western Cape, Easter Cape and Kimberley.
What is their turnover pro rata to our totes win place pools.
Chris waiting for your attack.

Hi Bravo, my one contribution to the thread till now, based on the only 60 seconds I saw of the show stated how I found the statement baffling as the criteria for calculating "who puts least in often has the most to say", was not defined.

Cheers

I agree w/Cats, Bookies put up prices that connections take up and BAM! Everyone else knows that the Horse (hopefully!) is a player - but as Gajima says, they still gotta win!

So said connections get a 'small' advantage price wise - But 'others' may have also noticed a Horse working well and said prices can still end up in hands other than the connections.

How anyone can not see the logic of a Trainer inparting the well-being of a particular Horse to the persons that have bought, fed and watered for several months is beyond me.

The alternative of the Trainer going around several days before singing the praises of said Horse will mean: a) a much shorter opening price = suits only the 'bookies' b) everyone and his brother 'jumping on' = reduced chance of the owners getting a fair price and c) less money returned to 'kitty' = less income for additional Horses.

I dare say that if money is no object, or you have a lot of disposible income, you can take the view point that the 'punt' doesn't matter. For the rest of us however, clawing some additional cash back is very much a part of the game - and yes. the 'buzz' of ownership. Although, if you have a 'good un' - imvho the punt is very much secondary to the 'pride' of racing against the best.

Jim.

Was just flipping through channels last night and caught the last half of the repeat broadcast .Found the discussion on barrier trials very interesting , having been out of punting for many years. I heard the reason mooted as giving the punter more information and wilst that's laudible the problem for the average punter is that the owner, trainer and jockey have their own agenda so no amount of information will ever enable you to come out on top. With the other forms of gambling that have come on the market over the past 20 odd years at least the punter knows the odds he's up against. So the big punters have left racing. It's no wonder the racing industry is dying. I used to spend hours studying form etc to no avail. It's a mug's game. Rather spend the time watching sport and betting on sport. At least you know you're gonna get an honest run for your money.
Despite this I still enjoy the occasional day at the races and would hate to see it go.

My contribution is

1. BARRIER TRIALS is a solution looking for a problem

2. Any idiot can price up a race of first-timers by looking at the stable/jock/owner/cost/pedigree combination and come up with the opening betting. Given the tiny claims in place, market sentiment will very quickly adjust mistakes.

3. You can't really have a proper bet until the last 10 min before a race most of the time, so the public have pretty much the same chance to get on as anybody else.

4. The only real plus for Barrier Trials is your baby gets to have a proper grass gallop, which trainers often say is impossible to get.

5. After that, you will find 2yo racing to be honest and consistent and more predictable than the rest.

So what is the problem we trying to fix?

Where are you girls on this? If the debate had been a tennis match Mr Faull wins 6-0, 6-0,6-0. You go boy! Mr Wainstein's heart is right but his head is confused. Larry, please find the promised land and get us through the red sea. To Messrs Garner and Moodley I say "sis Jong". How is God's name is fractional timing going to bring new people to the sport? Please explain. Owner betting privileges are eveil, immoral and against the law. Nothing but embarrasing chauvinists! I am famous for my speed and am sick and tired of the weaker sex who continue to testosterone SA racing to death. Wake up and smell the coffee or we will have you all gelded.

Well done Garrick! You need not be gelded! Bravo Bravo! Same for you. Jamster, you are first on the cutting block. Who do you think pays for the racetrack you're racing on and the prize money you are racing for? Do you want to go back to the days of Charles II when the owner paid for everything?

The problem we're trying to fix is empty grandstands, pathetic turnovers (Jay Peg has earned R32 million OUT of the country) and an atrocious image in the eyes of most people. We're concerned about whose not supporting our business and not those who are already insiders and blind to our problems. We need to systemize transparency, and not leave it to the whims of TV presenters, trainers and jockeys.
