The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held at its Durban office on 30 January 2017, Mr L G Denysschen was charged with the following :-
1.A contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the trainer of PURE VALOR, from which a urine specimen was taken after it had participated in and won the 4th Race at Greyville Racecourse on 21 September 2016, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Caffeine, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.
2.A contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the trainer of FOR EVER, from which a plasma specimen was taken after it had participated in and won the 8th Race at Greyville Racecourse on 23 September 2016, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Caffeine, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.
3.A contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the trainer of FOR EVER, from which a urine specimen was taken after it had participated in and won the 7th Race at Greyville Racecourse on 14 October 2016, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Caffeine, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.
4.A contravention of Rule 73.2.3 in that he was the trainer of FASHION FUSION, from which a blood specimen was taken from the horse prior to the running of the 5th Race at Greyville Racecourse on 19 October 2016, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Caffeine, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.
5.A contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the trainer of PRINCIPATE from which a urine specimen was taken after it had participated in and won the 8th Race at Greyville Racecourse on 28 October 2016, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Caffeine, a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.

Mr Denysschen pleaded not guilty but was found guilty of the above charges.

In considering a sentence, the Inquiry Board took into account the evidence advanced, both in mitigation and aggravation of sentence and in particular :-

– the fact that Mr Denysschen had five separate findings in respect of a prohibited substance namely, Caffeine, within a period of five weeks.

– this is a second offence for the same prohibited substance, namely Caffeine.

– the prohibited substance namely, Caffeine is a performance enhancing drug.

– the racing public is directly prejudiced by this type of conduct and The National Horseracing Authority is obliged to protect racing in South Africa. Five separate findings in respect of prohibited substance has a severely negative impact on the image of racing.

The Inquiry Board imposed a fine of R180 000.

Furthermore, in terms of Rule 72.3.2, each horse, namely PURE VALOR, FOR EVER, FASHION FUSION and PRINCIPATE, is disqualified from the abovementioned races that they participated in and in respect of which the provisions of Rule 67.7.8 shall apply mutatis mutandis.

Agree with this 100%. Just exactly when are the Jockey Club going to warn people off for doping? This example shows a well planned doping game plan by the trainer, there was no mix-up or contamination or vet mistake in clearing time etc. What we had here was a trainer who gained unfair advantages over his competition by cheating. It would be interesting to follow the money trail and see who profited by this.

The Jockey Club need to grow a pair and protect punters.

Pardon my ignorance. To me something does not seem right and would love to hear the trainers version here.

It just seems suicide for him to have purposely put the above ingredient in all those horses.

Nice heading. It amazes me how all the doping offences happen in the centres with the weaker horses. Is it because these trainers can't compete because of poor stock or they just cheating to survive in a tough game.

how long have you been following horseracing for and how often do you go onto the nhra website to see who gets fines bans etc for the above mentioned offences?

I see caffeine is not banned in the Olympics and I found this article from 2005 that seems to suggest that it has little effect on performance .. I personally have never found that coffee improves my physical performance .....
Maybe an expensive storm in a teacup?

I have been playing horses since 1993.i never go into nhra website and i only know what i read here on abc. This heading was good,i read,i ask why trainer needs to dope, for greed,or because his horses are not good enough to compete in the centre he trains in,and bear in mind this centre is not the strongest(horses from kzn can't compete in classic distance races anymore, not even in their own season). This is no secret and it is there for all to see.when i started playing, in the Cape season you had D Payne(i was there when A Delpech won the met on Imperious Sue) ,M Airey,A Gordon H Browne Drier and other KZN trainers competing in the feature races in the Cape, now KZN trainers don't compete, they don't have horses running in the Met,Queens plate,Majorca,Paddock,Guinneas, etc.the KZN boys need to up there game imo and they need to wake up and realize how far backwards the have gone since the 90's.

Now i don't care who dopes or not, because i have lost faith in this game i loved and played everyday,i now play only on certain days,i don't play Kimberley and PE,hardly ever play KZN unless it's in season because i have other alternatives to bet my money on like sports where i don't have to worry about doping,is the horse fit enough,is it having a prep run,or some other unknown factor.i never thought i would see the day where i stopped playing horses, but the way the game is going, that day might not be too far off.

All drugs have safe periods, the ones that get caught have done their sums wrong
