Hat Putano, by the Japanese sire Hat Trick – a grandson of Sunday Silence – out of the Bernstein mare Stormy Pursuer, is owned by Drakenstein Stud in partnership with Mr Jaime and Mrs Mariza Vilela, and has an outstanding Argentinean race record where he earned a merit rating of 112.
After winning his debut by 16 lengths, as a two-year-old he won the Grade 1 Gran Premio Gran Criterium over a mile in his second start. He was unplaced in his next race, another Grade 1 event, and in his only start as a three-year-old he won the Grade 1 Gran Premio Clasico Dos Mil Guineas.
Mike Azzie said the colt would have his first local race in a Progress Plate on the Highveld on May 28 after which it was hoped the handicappers would make a new assessment of him. “They have rated him a 113 and it will depend on how they treat him whether I will run him in the Vodacom Durban July.
“Fortunately, I have good owners and I am not going to go through what I did last year with Abashiri and run him with a weight of 57,5kg against the local classic winners that are set to carry a lot less.”
Azzie said he would make a decision when the weights are announced and he may take him out and run him in the Champions Cup at the end of the season and then in the two big races in the Cape.
The colt was the only horse supplemented into the Vodacom Durban July
Terrible lack of class by Azzie. Last year was thanking God for the very same owners. Disgusting!
I am not 100% certain if this is the same horse but if it is then the only reason it races in South Africa is that the "money appropriated from telkom" bought this horse as Van Vuuren bought a few horses from Argentina .

You was correct Mr H
UPDATED ON MAY 9, 2017
The Michael Azzie trained dual Grade 1 winner, Hat Puntano (ARG), was an interesting supplementary entry this morning for the 2017 Vodacom Durban July bringing to 47 the number of horses still in contention for the big race on 1 July 2017.
Deo Juvente wins the Victory Moon Stakes Deo Juvente – tops the log
The first VDJ Log has been issued by Gold Circle and serves as a clear indication as to who would be in the field if the race was run tomorrow.
“We have not considered Hat Puntano at this stage as he has yet to win beyond 1600 metres and has not been seen in action since July 2016,” said Gold Circle Racing Executive Raf Sheik. “Hopefully he will make his South African debut in the near future,” he added.
The top six spots on the VDJ Log are occupied by horses who have won automatic qualifying races this season. Marinaresco and Captain America, at 7 and 8, lead the way amongst the balance but there is a long way to go yet and those on the outside looking in still have plenty of opportunities to qualify.

Agreed Lionel, disgusting. Also how can a trainer not know the conditions of the race? The maximum weight for a 3 year old colt is 57kg so couldn't carry 57,5kgs unless the top rated horse was withdrawn after the weights were published.
It is lovely to hold a gun to handicappers head and say I will be running my horse in a progress plate to get a rating drop, if you don't drop its rating we won't run him in the July. All round quality guy.

Contested only 2 grade 1 races before... ran 4th and unplaced....
Won a 1600m grade 2 a year ago and since ran 4 times and best of those 4 runs was a 5th place in a pinnacle.
If he is so highly thought off ? Who do you guys make your current top 20??
Would love to hear .....
I think it is more about horses being preferred to Black Arthur - the 'best' way to judge a horse's ability is arguably by his official MR - and Black Arthur is officially rated 104 (although imo he ran to higher in the July last year) - so if one takes the runners that pre-qualify (some unwritten rule?) we have a 3 yr old filly with a MR of 99  And among those that do not pre-qualify, we have runners like Master Switch with MR 101 and Elusive Silva at 99  - so imo there is no way in the world that Black Arthur should not be in the Top 20

MR's are not the only criteria which gets you a run. Recent form in conjunction with MR's is also a criteria with the evaluators.

If you look at the conditions it is very clear that Gold Circle can basically do what they like..... The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into springs to mind. Pirates asks relevant questions on SP. It is a disgrace that the countries "premier race" has become a thing of opinion amongst some not so wise men.
