guys, the entry fee was returned in the form of betting vouchers. Two reasons for a gate charge:
1) easy way to count heads present
2) give the money back and encourage betting through a voucher

to distill and revert back to the topic of the thread, my opinion as to why pools and payouts have not grown is because punters. We don't have enough punters, who provide the income that keeps racing going. Perhaps another thread could be started saying 'Why don't we have enough punters?'

Many people seem to forget what happened to the " old" racing. Only a few thousand years ago this became redundant. So why should as we know it to-day, survive?!. Note the name Circus.....
The Circus Maximus was the oldest and the largest of all the circuses
where chariot races took place holding up to 250, 000 spectators
The race itself was much like its Greek counterpart, although there were usually 24 races every day that, during the fourth century, took place on 66 days each year. However, a race consisted of only 7 laps (and later 5 laps, so that there could be even more races per day), instead of the 12 laps of the Greek race. The Roman style was also more money-oriented; racers were professionals and there was widespread betting among spectators. There were four-horse chariots (quadrigae) and two-horse chariots (bigae), but the four-horse races were more important. In rare cases, if a driver wanted to show off his skill, he could use up to 10 horses, although this was extremely impractical.

Pick n mix - when you have lost of choices you take a little of each!
Punters have more choices these days, the young prefer to punt the other choices.
I wrote it here on abc 10 years ago through my experience working in UK Betting shops. I said since the growth of online betting and smart phone betting we can`t entice youngsters to punt the horses anymore.Yet sports and casino gambling is growing!
People said "bob have you seen the queues in our betting lounges" it won`t happen in SA!
I said we had the same queues in the UK a few years ago!
People said "but you guys have better access to the internet"
Roll on a few years and you guys have better access to the internet and your betting lounges although still busy everyone is punting anything but racing and the young wont punt racing!
Times change, roll with it!

So Don what about the regular punter? I would have solved this by putting a tear-out free entry in the Citizen and Computaform - The guy then feels he's rewarded and does not have to shell out R50 even if it is returned to him - I would have attached an area where he could write his name and let him drop that in a box and a draw after the main race could have been held for a few prizes - There is motivation for him to come racing and the crowd is bigger and thus turnover improves on course

There were actually 3 reasons
3) Keep the outies out and stop them from harassing the few owners/punters that still frequent the track

over the air that problem doesn't exist anymore
outies troubling you on course ?
the solution is buy a red suit go to the course and beat them up

sorry I couldn't resist
but seriously if I punch someone on course I'll just say what's the problem since Larry did it
