Why have pools and payouts not grown enough?
8 years 3 weeks ago
The other day I read somewhere that Phumelela was guaranteeing a minimum P6 pool for Champions day. The champions day's P6 pool started off with a large carry over amount from other meetings. I was impressed and enticed. From a marketing perspective Phumelela deserves a big thumbs up. After not catching the ever elusive P6 which I might add is usual for me and seeing the payout being over R200 thousand I started to ask myself some questions and have tried to find answers. I was not able to find the answers. Hopefully a knowledgeable ABC poster can assist.
1. In Gauteng, Phumelela controls horse racing. It is responsible for marketing horse racing. Why doesn't it advertise horse racing in country wide media publications and in prominent places for the public to view and to entice more people to the sport?
2. If Phumelela is able to guarantee a P6 pool on any meeting. Why does it not guarantee a P6 pool for every meeting. This guarantee would entice Phumelela to get its marketing out there to the people. I suppose I am talking about putting your money where your mouth is.
3. I see that P6 pools are not growing and if they are, they are growing at a ridiculously low rate. Why are our pools which are commingled overseas, so poor?
4. When is Phumelela going to give back to punters and the sport and contribute out of its own pocket say R5 million to a P6 pool on one particular day? By doing this it would be able to claim the R5 million from the taxman as an expense, it will boost its marketing and awareness of horse racing and it will ensure a healthy pool swelling into figures that punters could not have dreamed about. Another option is for it to let punters know that for the next 5 meetings, it will not take its 20% cut out of the pools.

Competing with other markets, their market share has dropped from nearly 100% to 20% with all the other avenues punters have these days.
Think we need to accept and get on with it

I found this Bob. The market in SA may have shrunk. With commingling the markets should be exploding. Something is wrong. Is all the money being directed into our pools? If the UK pound was being bet into our pools, I would expect higher payouts.
"PHUMELELA Gold Enterprises and Betfair are delighted to announce that Betfair’s two million customers will be able to bet into South African tote pools and watch live streams of races from next week Monday 13 July. Tote bets on South African races taken on the Betfair platform will be channelled into TAB pools hosted on Phumelela’s Amtote betting system in Johannesburg. The ability to place tote bets on South African races on Betfair is an added service for Betfair customers and will assist in publicising racing in this country internationally.
Phumelela’s Group Chief Executive Officer Rian du Plessis is delighted with the deal and said: “The future of tote betting lies in the online environment and Betfair is a significant player in this market.
“Betfair are an extremely progressive operation. This matches our ambitions and consequently we are examining other areas of co-operation,” added Du Plessis.
Betfair’s Head of Horse Racing Business Development Steven Johnson said: “This deal further underlines our commitment to the support of international racing. We now have tote betting on our site in four jurisdictions – South Africa, Ireland, Australia and the UK – and this partnership will send money back into South African racing both from our exchange and the Tote product.”

I get what Jurgs is saying. Before comingling the pools were as big as what they are now. Why have these pools not exploded in rand terms? You just have to see the effect that comingling has on the win pools on our races when only France partakes.
Something is not adding up. Could it be that foreign comingling ON THE EXOTICS is not going to the into the SAFTOTE pools and is going somewhere else. Like the ISLE OF MAN operation? I see that Vee Moodley is not answering these very questions on SP.

all of the above valid but for me the LOTTO has destroyed racing(and soccer multiples) - New Lotto Raffle - 12 millionaires in one day(plus 1500 cash prizes - tickets R20) - how can racing compete? Power ball winner 5 May R11 Million.... that's the way dream punters play - rather take a lotto for R20 and if you win you are out of it than use that R20 and try to win R40 back on a sw or win bet on a fav - Purists are keeping racing going but they will be dead mostly in the next 20 years or so - As much as operators have mismanaged Racing the reality is the public have no interest ... I know I will be taking a raffle at R20 -

EVEN one of the biggest owners ever , Prince Khalid Abdullah. has the following to say about his children. So its not only a SA thing.........
His Highness is looking forward to continuing to race his horses at the highest level in Europe and the US,” Erskin Crum continued, of the 79-year-old prince, whose children do not share his passion for Thoroughbreds. “There will still be two main operational centres: the farms near Lexington and Banstead Manor Stud. Our priority now is to ensure that we have the right strategy in place to sustain the long-term future and quality of Juddmonte’s bloodstock.”

One major reason is cause most bookies taken exotics bets now days which don't go into pools and it's much better for big players to bet with bookies. I think people would be shocked how big the numbers are together

Being able to take 1c exotic lines doesn't help!
Interesting question is why Betfair is not licensed to operate , but OK to contract with "p"?

I probably dont know much but I would have make these changes .....
Ban the open bet !!!!!! 99% of people i talk to have bookmaker accounts and no telebet account . Go ask around
.im pretty sure their are much more being punted on tote odds at the bookmakers than the tote itself.
Ban especially the bookmakers' rights to offer EXOTICS !!!!
My fiancee always make sure she have a ticket when the lotto is paying 10-40 million, she never even consider or bother to mention when its not "big" (going to make us rich ) , she wants to win big , even if others win it also , she wants to be part of that big payout one day... and she will keep on trying even the cost of R2,50 per line.
Now imagine if the lotto wasnt run by only the lotto company itself and the full amount of sold tickets in the pot wasnt displayed for all to see. Would the lotto ever be 40 million if Spar , Shoprite , PicknPay and hundreds other sold tickets at the same price but only the tickets sold by the lotto company itself get displayed?????? Now an actual 40 million pot looks like or get displayed as a 5 million pot . Now my fiancee lost interest because of the "small" 5 million pool but if all sold tickets went into the displayed pool then she would have seen its actually 40 million to be won ( i bet she will hassle me for a extra R50 to invest in our "big win waiting to be won"
People want to see what they buy into , for example :
Lets say the pick 6 is on a normal day about 800k showing on tabonline, teletrack , oncourse and whereever .... people see that ....does it get them exited? Maybe or most probably not. How many tickets into this pick6 have been sold by bookmakers ? 5x , 10x or how many times more????? That pot could have been 6-10 million if all pick 6 tickets was mainly sold by the tab (lotto company) , will that get my fiancee exited ?? ... she will have her nose in a computaform everyday to win that big money daily....
Hope it make sense
Take away the % betting in the exotics .... all of them . Make it a R1 unit and not this 1c unit we have now but bring back couplings in pick 6 and make the place accumalator 3 places for races carded with 10 or less runners and with races with 11 and more runners carded make it 4 places.
And advertise racing and big pools to the public , not just to the dieheart punter that is getting more and more annoyed.
Show them what they CAN win , like the lotto , and joe public will follow that big money that can be won, and once hooked into racing , you hooked forever.

zietsman I'll answer a bit
why should we open a tote account and get zero benefits ?
world sports betting R3000 sign up bonus
like pirates mentioned Hollywood gives you r9000 free every year
today world sports betting phoned me to take down my exotic bets , that's customer service
many bookies offer this service and bonuses, while the tote got a HUGE take out
Big P thinks its their business and we shouldn't interfere
horse owners thinks its their horse and they don't need us
but us the punters must donate 25% to them for what ?????
so the owner can collect stakes and the big P shareholders can collect dividends
I got an idea to make the pools bigger , how about they stop stealing with the HUGE take outs ?
I won't help maintain the industry that doesn't treat us fair
