My belief is that they have always gone for the betting. Certainly not the stakes or riding fees. A jockey like Yeni has 100 rides a month in SA equating to approx R90,000 in riding fees never mind the percentages that his mounts earn. Why would he go to Mauritius for 4 meetings a month if not for the cash they earn. I know of many jockeys that have made a lot of money in Mauritius and that wasnt on Booked mounts. More like BOOKS !!
Thats the gospel Good.Once had a chat with Robbie Hill who said he made more money in Mauritius than riding in SA and with lots of Perks!!!

Jockeys in Mur dont get paid a riding fee and they only get 4.5% of very poor stake money. Usually what ever stake money they do get paid (end of the season) covers the tax they have to pay at the end of their stints. Jockeys get paid a very good salary here, normally more what they earn in SA. They ride once a week and the lifestyle is good. The stable also has a bet for their jockeys as well, and when a stable backs a horse that the stable has had a bet on the "gifts" from stables are pretty generous.
Its up to the individual to stay out of trouble, away from temptation (and believe me, theres plenty of it) and they can earn good money. No need to be greedy. If you manage to stay a whole season with a stable you can go home a happy man. If not........... well you've seen what can happen.

The thing here Is once the police get hold of u and your passports people seem to wipe their hands off of you. Rene Bonham stuck here for ages with not one person helping him out. No passport, no work permit, how do you survive?
I thought Rene had just fallen off the radar, didn't realise he is still stuck on the island.

Rene
was allowed off the island after his incident. He married a lady from Mauritius (I'm nearly certain) so might be living back there. I spine to him about 6 years ago and he has nothing to do with racing any longer.
I might add that his "incident" there was an accident and he was found not guilty BUT the prices took ages

I did not mean he is still here, i was talking about his case many years ago. I think he was stuck here for 2 years before he could leave.
