Two years to kill the Met
7 years 7 months ago
so come 27 January 2018 at Kenilworth in Cape Town will the day be a big sucess or a massive failure.
for me this year will be the 1st of many where crowds will be down and the day will never again achieve the J and B Numbers of years gone by.

Agree but there's a twist. The Queens Plate is now far more trendy among the younger set and would now seem the event of choice for the socialites. The younger set will not all be buying new outfits a few weeks apart. The decline in Met attendance has already begun and is another example of how not to do things by the inefficients

Don’t see why it should fail
Sun Met will have a huge advertising budget, much bigger than all the other races in SA
Look at Bolt on Sunday, he was special presenter at the F1 and that’s huge compared with the Met

GIVE SunMet and GH Mumm a chance to develop their identity with racing, they decided to start small last year and build it up and working nicely trying to incorporate and understand the sport (open communication with RIAR to help them with the horseracing components etc). They're a much stronger brand than J&B... and have a huge international following. We all miss J&B - having had 39 years of unbroken sponsorship which was amazing! But now it is time to look forward and support this new sponsor and make sure the partnership with racing will work for them as much as it will work for racing.

besides, just think about it. J&B is a middle of the road whiskey. GH Mumm a french champagne. Coupled with Sun International Hotels. There is a class difference here...and that is what the sponsor will try and stamp on their event.

The potential 'problem' that I see here is that the 'event' will be priced out of local racegoers range - catering to the overseas market and all the international visitors - great for them and the sponsors, not so good for the locals ?
