FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT of the 2018 CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE

We are thrilled to announce that Track And Ball Gaming are again sponsoring the Charity Turf Challenge which kicks off on “The Independent On Saturday” Drill Hall Stakes Day, Friday 4 May, and finishes on the reinstated “Super Saturday” headlined by the Gr.3 eLan Gold Cup, 28 July.

The Charity Turf Challenge worth R100 000 to the winning entry is an exciting competition that offers fans of the sport of horseracing a unique opportunity to test their skill – after all, racing is the “Intelligent Bet!”

The aim of the Charity Turf Challenge is to select a team of horses you feel are most likely to score points during the official period of the Champions Season. A list of all the Graded races will be provided and whilst the emphasis remains on these feature races run in KZN, ALL winners throughout the country will be eligible to earn points. The points breakdown can be found below:
Grade 1 Races:
1st place 20 points
2nd place 14 points
3rd place 10 points
Grade 2 Races:
1st place 14 points
2nd place 9 points
3rd place 6 points
Grade 3 Races:
1st place 9 points
2nd place 5 points
3rd place 3 points
Listed Races:
1st place 2 points
All other Races:
1st place 1 point

Bonus Points: the following are eligible for 5 bonus points:
a) Bonus Races - the winners of the following races:
Tsogo Sun Sprint - 1200m (26 May at Scottsville Racecourse)
The Rising Sun Gold Challenge - 1600m (09 June at Greyville Racecourse)
Vodacom Durban July - 2200m (07 July at Greyville Racecourse)
eLan Gold Cup - 3200m (28 July at Greyville Racecourse) **now Gr.3**
b) Long Shots - any winner whose official Tote win payout exceeds R15

Points will be scored on the FINAL result (all clear to pay) posted on SAFTOTE.

Racing South Africa, the competition host, will provide a list of horses that are thought to be campaigning in KZN during Champions Season. Only horses from this list are eligible.

So, what’s NEW this year?

Firstly, based on fan feedback after last year’s competition, we have increased the number of entries per list from 10 to 12, but only the top ten point scorers from each list will be considered for the final point’s tally. Too often selections fall out of the running for any number of reasons and we hope that the increase to 12 entries will give entrants a greater chance of competing for the top prize.

Secondly, for the first time since the competition began, the Premier’s Champions Challenge Day will be included in the competition adding an interesting if not challenging dimension to this year’s CTC. This is because The Independent on Saturday Drill Hall Stakes meeting (including the Gr.2 Daisy Guineas) comes before the Gauteng finale which takes place on Saturday 5 May at Turffontein Racecourse. As racing fans will know, apart from the Premier’s Champions Challenge, the day features some cracking good races including another two Gr.1’s, the historic SA Derby and the country’s fastest sprint, the World Sports Betting Computaform Sprint. Additionally, there are another four Graded races offering fans a feast of big races on the opening weekend.

The final list of horses is expected to be available by Friday 13 April. To the best of its knowledge, Racing South Africa will attempt to keep players informed of horses that are NOT participating for whatever reason.

In addition to the FREE BONUS entry for every 5 entries submitted for ONLINE users (sixth entry is free), our title sponsor, Track And Ball Gaming, is offering NEW online account holders a betting credit worth R200 added to their first deposit (minimum deposit of R50). For more information about this promotion, please contact the Track And Ball team directly on: 031 314 1969 or email: onlinesupport@trackandball.co.za or visit the website: www.trackandball.co.za

As has been the case in past competitions, apart from the grand prize of R100 000 (puR20 000 for second and R10 000 for third), there is also the very popular stand-alone prize of R20 000 for the entry that earns the most points on Vodacom Durban July Day only.

TabGold is again kindly sponsoring R10 000 worth of betting vouchers for the ever-popular weekly draw and the African Horse Sickness Trust is again the beneficiary.

I think it's an improvement - question is does one try and pinch a solid lead on the first weekend - at least one would be able to include runners certain to take part

I like the 10 out of 12 count as you can now go for an obscure pick and hope it comes in and if it doesn't you still have 10 out of 11 to score.

Dear Racing Fans

Winning Ways will host Peter Gibson on Monday night’s show to officially launch this year’s Charity Turf Challenge, so be sure to tune in to the popular magazine programme for some insights into this year’s competition.

Whilst we had hoped to have finalized the entry form with the list of horses by today, we have yet to complete our research adequately and now expect to have this done by Tuesday next week. Apart from the normal eliminations due to injury and export, the addition of the Premier’s Champions Challenge in this year’s competition, there are a number of horses are not likely to compete beyond Turffontein’s grand finale, so we are trying our best to establish which are in this group in order to give fans as much of a chance as possible. As we said in our introduction, this meeting certainly adds a challenging dimension to the CTC!

Great news from our title sponsor, Track & Ball Gaming, who have secured the services of TV pundit Deez Dayanand for the duration of the competition! Having previously worked for Racing South Africa, Deez brings wonderful enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge about the CTC and will effectively play an ambassadorial role for Track & Ball. Expect an announcement from our sponsors about which branches Deez will be visiting in the lead up to the starting date of 4 May.

In response to a fans’ query, please note that the same points allocation will apply to the stand alone prize on Vodacom Durban July Day. In other words, only the top 10 point scorers will be recorded for the purposes of determining the winning entry or entries.

Don’t forget the offers available for this year’s CTC:
A FREE BONUS entry for every 5 entries submitted for ONLINE users – in other words, the sixth entry is free! Take 12 entries and only pay for 10 etc etc
Track & Ball Gaming, is offering NEW online account holders a betting credit worth R200 added to their first deposit (minimum deposit of R50). For more information about this promotion, please contact them directly on: 031 314 1969 or email: onlinesupport@trackandball.co.za or visit the website: www.trackandball.co.za
TabGold is again kindly sponsoring R10 000 worth of betting vouchers for the ever-popular weekly draw from entries selected randomly by computer generated means

I have gone through the list of horses but can't find Abashiri. Are my eyes deceiving me or is this correct?

Not checked Shrek, but Peter did say he contacted the JHB trainers and asked which runners are heading to kzn.. Maybe not coming?

But he should be in because of the champions challenge?

Thanks Bob, it is the same for everyone.

I will be loading my entries with Snowdance, I don't think many people will be putting this one in. :P

I think Abashiri should have been on the list - even if the idea currently is not send him to KZN; we all know that plans can change ..... not that I would have included him.

Time to put the thinking caps on and finalise those entries - would be nice to know which of the Gauteng 3 yr old colts are definitely NOT going down
