COVID-19 – UPDATE ON HOTSPOT AREAS

As per the President’s address to the nation last night, we are experiencing a spike in infections as the virus resurges in our communities and three hotspot areas have been identified within South Africa. These are Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth), the Sarah Baartman District and the Garden Route.

As of last night, the President imposed new Lockdown rules for the Nelson Mandela Bay region only (Port Elizabeth) although it remains on Alert Level 1. On that basis, the NHA sends a strong message to all travelling Jockeys that race in Port Elizabeth to ensure that extra precaution is taken whilst present in this hotspot area and upon returning to other racing districts in the country. This situation will be closely monitored by the Chief Compliance Officer, Mr Arnold Hyde and his team.

Should the spread of the virus continue in the current trajectory, we will have no option but to stop inter-provincial travelling by Jockeys to the Eastern Cape.

As we head into the festive season, please remember to continue following COVID-19 safety guidelines. The fight is not over and we urge you to be diligent and responsible. The non-pharmaceutical measures of wearing masks, practising social distancing, washing of hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and sanitising, is the proven best form of defence. By acting to limit the spread of the virus, we can manage the load on our healthcare system and ultimately save lives.

Please treat this as an important message to ensure the sustainability and continuation of racing in South Africa.

How the World has changed .

I heard quote the other day comparing the devastating loss of 2400 Americans at Pearl Harbor in 1941 .
In 2020 covid has been surpassing this figure on a daily basis 😷😢🙏

Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, that was the scene of a devastating surprise attack by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack, including civilians, and another 1,000 people were wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan.

The there are rumours of another presidential address to the nation tonight? More restrictions? Maybe no booze from tomorrow? What about the beaches and restaurants? Will the festive season be cancelled?

We await the news before the mass exodus to the coast

you know I was thinking about this - the beach could well be pretty safe with the heat and sunlight and hopefully social distancing BUT traveling to the beach either days before in taxis or buses or traveling to the beach on the big holidays is where all the crap will start as people will be packed in public transport and as is part of our culture we sing when we are going to a function and share one drink between a few people (ironic how the good part of socializing could be the death of many) - I don't know if there is a solution as many holiday destinations survive only because of December and Easter so how do you weigh up economy vs death - and hospitals in the holiday areas battle to cope with their normal population and now add massive amounts of visitors - and that's before you add alcohol and fighting and car crashes to the pot - would not want to be decision makers in Government - I'm normally not the type to want restrictions on my liberty but I will not be upset if some strong ones are issued to protect the vulnerable

WTO delays decision on waiver on COVID-19 drug, vaccine rights

By Emma Farge, Stephanie Nebehay

3 Min Read

GENEVA (Reuters) - World Trade Organization members on Thursday delayed a decision on a proposal to waive intellectual property rules for COVID-19 drugs and vaccines amid ongoing opposition from wealthy countries, a Geneva trade official said.

“Big Pharma” has rejected an idea proposed by India and South Africa that would grant compulsory licensing of the vaccines and drugs by overriding patent rules of WTO’s Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) agreement, allowing generic or other manufactures to make the new products.

The proposal has won support from some countries at the WTO but is opposed by Western countries, including Britain, Switzerland and the United States, which have strong domestic pharmaceutical industries.

Non-governmental organisations have been pressuring rich governments to ease rules temporarily as they did during the AIDS epidemic, arguing that they create barriers to access to affordable medicines and vaccines for vulnerable people around the world. This week, the WTO received a petition signed by more than 900,000 people asking it to “ensure access to life-saving COVID-19 vaccines, treatments and equipment for everyone in the world.”

South Africa’s delegation told the WTO’s TRIPS Council on Thursday that barriers should be lifted. Many people volunteering in developing countries to participate in vaccine trials would probably be denied priority access to doses in the current situation, the Geneva trade official said.

Countries saw a common goal of providing access to safe, efficacious, affordable vaccines and medicines for all, but did not reach consensus on a waiver, the official said. Talks were set to continue in 2021, beyond a current year-end deadline.

Companies that have developed COVID-19 products argue that most developing countries lack the manufacturing capacity and technology know-how to make the new products.

“When you look at the political discussion in WTO on TRIPS, even if the patents were waived, not a single more vaccine would reach people during the pandemic. It would send a really bad signal for the future,” said Thomas Cueni, director general of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations, during a Tuesday panel.

“If the signal is, if we have a new pandemic, we’ll take away your patents which have enabled us to react so strongly, I do not think this would be the right thing,” he added.

“The (intellectual property), which is the blood of the private sector, is what brought a solution to this pandemic and it is not a barrier right now,” Albert Bourla, chief executive of Pfizer which has a leading COVID vaccine with BioNTech, said on Tuesday
