I think to be fair all round one should wait until the appeal is finalized...The handicappers I believe are not far off,, if Dean gets it right,, then I think they have to run to beat GWE... We've already seen what the 3 year olds can do in open company...

Is someone appealing a hike in Merit Rating?
@ Frankie , where is Purple Pitcher going to prep for July ? I stand to be corrected but he hasn't ever run at Greyville before ?
I think he has to have a chance given his runs in the Classic and Derby but am concerned that he has not run at the course before.

Purple Pitcher has not run at Greyville yet ....
Another spanner in the works as Double Superlative is reportedly likely to be entered for the July - at current ratings will be carrying 56 kgs (receiving 4 kgs from See It Again) - so must be a runner - but can't find him quoted at either WSB or Hollywood (probably waiting for him to be supplemented) - strange as they have more than a few quoted that surely would be highly unlikely to make the final field

Was this horse not retired to stud recently?

1 year 1 week agoYes - apparently not enough interest - so back in training and in KZN - entered for the Gold Challenge but reportedly probably will rather run in a Pinnacle on 15 June ...Was this horse not retired to stud recently?

I thought it was a bold move to send him to stud given the quality available at the moment. I would say Charles Dickens and Jet Dark would have been the choice of many ..

Interesting thread, thank you Heinrich...and all the insightful contributions by everyone. One question that I would like to raise is how long can a horse be kept at its peak? The reason I ask, in the DN2000, Barbaresco looked close to a horse at its' peak to me, whereas GwE had room for improvement. (all visually in my opinion only, Barbaresco looked better to post, and whilst did not get the best of luck in the running, it should be a bit closer to GwE. However, and here I agree with Muhti...running from behind in a large field leaves a lot to fate...especially when we don't know if the track will suit horses running on from behind.
I hope that this thread continues at pace...

Purple Pitcher nominated for Jubilee Handicap on 9th June.
Will be going into the July without having raced at Greyville , hopefully the yard utilise the July gallops to "show" him the course.
I make him a huge runner as he is the type of horse who loves getting into a scrap and doesn't throw the towel in.

no sure what the breeders are thinking...son of Twice Over - sired the winners of Met and July - surely he deserves to carry on that line

I had a quick look at the entries for the Jubilee - a few interesting runners (if they run) opposing Purple Pitcher - Son of Raj (now with the Peter stable), Jordan (would be an interesting runner for comparing Barbaresco and Purple Pitcher) and even the stable mate Pyromaniac (has not won for ages - but will be at level weights with Jordan) - all of then currently drawn a bit wide - also Perfect Witness (drawn pole) and looks sure to be competitive carrying only 51.5 kgs .....
And in other news ... I see that Frances Ethel will now be back in the July
