Muhtiman post=900035 userid=767......not that the times really matter as the pacier sorts showed they are quicker....but for me the best were 8on18 although he did not hit his top straps he is an imposing race horse.....and surprisingly Native Ruler but I may be biased as I am a sucker for the flashy chestnuts....
As you say, times are a bit confusing (and who is to say they are correct) - but from the times recorded I think 8 on 18 was not that great (belying his short odds) - can't have Native Ruler - best gallop of the morning (but I am biased) was On My Honour - IF they are correct - to quicken off a fast pace (44.9 for the 800-finish) and a not too shabby 22.69 (2nd fastest of the morning, despite jumping a shadow close to the finish) for the 400-finish, I think 4.66/1 for the first 4 is a steal

......when drilling into the pedigrees On My Honour was my dark horse as his tail(dam) line has stout stamina genes....however he seems a bit immature and spooked at a small shadow and again at the pullup into the poly....I would not discount his chances totally.... and if they go slow at the jump and he keeps the box seat and stays near the rail in the final drive he may make those swingers pay.....but if the jock takes him down the middle and he finds those late afternoon shadows.....oops

Hopefully he would have seen the shadows today, (I suppose they would like to keep the track in pristine condition, so no chance of having a canter again next week  ) - but yes that would a worry ...

......the reason I mention this is that one July day a goodie in the earlier juvenile race spooked at the not so late afternoon grandstand shadow and tossed the race......this year with a fuller program this race is later and the entire course down the business end should be under the shadow but daylight until until then.....he already races with a rather large shadow roll(nose band) and he still picks out the oddities on the surface....the box seat with cover may keep him from noticing the surface when they turn into the straight....huh

On my honour was the best gallop on what I saw , selukwe is a lovely horse and will be flying in the last 200m but talk on the course is oriental charm is better than last year and will win it again , it's gonna be a great race

Glenn Kotzen was beaming from ear to ear when Warren Lenferna interviewed him afterwards and Bling Khumalo was also full of praise for the horse. Definitely one to include in all bets .

Mr H may recall this article published by Racing Digest regards what all July winners had in common - no winner of the race ran less that eight races before going on to win the July. Alec Hogg may have done the article. Bush Telegraph had won all 8 starts before winning the July at the 9th run of his career.

There was a lot most winners had in common, this was the one fact that i will always remember. Back then though, the race conditions were totally different in that horses carrying less than 50.0kgs were handicapped with a chance before the introduction of Merit Ratings.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

wrote: Greys Inn July Result.jpgDazza post=900081 userid=17249"]I backed Greys Inn that year as I had a dream number 10 won !

If you remember correctly Greys Inn actually didn't have a number on the saddle cloth rather the South African flag to mark 10 years of democracy if I'm not mistaken?

My good friend in Cape Town still reminds me of that story today !

I hear what you are saying about everyone losing , but it's a stark reminder that odds on shots do get rolled in the July. Tread carefully!!

Immediate Edge also happens to be 10 this year but alas I haven't had any dreams.... Yet.

Thanks Sly ! Now look through that field , quality horses with the exception of probably Muscat Express who.came from Zim .

There is no doubt the quantity and quality of horse in SA is not what is used to be.

The biggest selling newspaper in Durban was the Daily News, the day before the race. Stewart Ramsay (think that was he's name) was the racing scribe, and people bought the paper to see what he tipped to win the race.

No doubt....so as a purist I would love 8 on 18 to win ...if he is as good as he seems to be let him win and go on to perhaps win a graded race overseas...then bring him back to enhance the breed....we need testing of our top horses....we don't need paper champions like those in Zimbabwe who win multiple races and dominate because there really is no population to race against...then they come to SA and are floored (25 years ago or even maybe 15 years ago a Zimbabwe champ could still be a worry in SA)....we also have some interesting bloodlines around because of that Jooste guy who imported lists of Aussie blood .....I do think that if the Big 8 wins on Saturday (if he loses it is also likely)....it may be the one of the last times he races in SA as his breeders are innovative and will surely test him in foreign lands

I would loved to have seen Charles Darwin have a go at the best milers in Europe. I think he would have more than held his own but I don't think these guys go down that route.

We'll see what happens in the July but I doubt they will campaign him overseas.

With regards to Zim racing, I grew up there and spent most of my Saturday afternoons as a child at Borrowdale Park. I could write a book about that place ! Sad to see what it has become now!
