Inquiry – jockey Andrew Fortune
NHA PRESS RELEASE:
The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held at its offices in Cape Town on 23 July 2009, Jockey Andrew Fortune, the rider of BALI MOJO, was charged with a contravention of Rule 72.1.25, in that he physically assaulted Jockey Morne Winnaar, the rider of WILD ‘N FREE, in the same race, in the weighing room, just prior to Weighing In after the running of Race 1 at Durbanville Racecourse on 19 May 2009.
Mr Fortune pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Inquiry Board found Mr Fortune guilty and imposed a two month suspension from riding in races, of which one month is wholly suspended for a period of one year, on condition that Mr Fortune is not charged with and found guilty of a similar offence under Rule 72.1.25 during that period. Furthermore, the suspended penalty of a 2 week suspension given by an Appeal Board on 23 January 2009 comes into effect as per the provision of the Appeal Board on that date.
The Inquiry Board further confirmed that the record of this Inquiry will be referred to Management and/or the Inquiry Review Board for a determination in regard to the appropriateness or otherwise of possible separate inquiry proceedings in relation to Mr Fortune’s possible contravention of Rule 72.1.42.
Mr Fortune has the Right of Appeal against the penalty imposed.

Made the UK press..
Leading jockey Andrew Fortune has been hit with three separate bans totalling eight weeks, two of them involving clashes with other riders.
But they do not come into force until the start of the new season on August 1, which means the rider's bid for his first championship is unaffected.
Fortune has ridden 200 winners this season and is 14 clear of his nearest challenger.
He has been given a one-month ban (two months but one suspended for a year) for assaulting Morne Winnaar in the weighing room at Durbanville on May 19. Fortune pleaded guilty to this.
This ban brought into play a two-week suspended sentence for his part in a whip brawl with Ian Sturgeon when pulling up after a race at Greyville last September.
In addition, Fortune has been suspended for a further ten days for failing to ensure that one of his mounts did not cause interference at Durbanville on June 9.
Fortune pleaded not guilty on this charge has until next Thursday to decide whether to appeal against both Durbanville suspensions.
If he does not appeal, the cases go before an inquiry review panel before the bans take effect.

The jockey he swatted in the early 90's was Robert Sweetman. Fortune was on a heavily backed favourite for Dereck Dalton. He won the race but lost it in the objection room.
What makes this case so bizarre is that Andre racially abused Morne. The last time I looked they were both of the same colour !

All due respect Harris there was no racial abuse WHAT SO EVER unless reminding Morne that he has children and that dangerous race riding is "off side" can be classed as racial ...check your facts/sources b4 making such an "authorotive" statement.

Andrew fortune can cause as much havoc as he likes...
they all do...some fight..others drink..others snort..others pull..others fall off..others punt.. others lie.....and some do all of the above...so what the hell...
I will still punt him..he is one of 2 jockeys that have natural ability..the other being striker..getting a bit old...but still a natural...
for wacking the jock's...go for it...I have a list that he can start on..
I weighed in the other day on the VAAL.. after mark khan...150kg...
3 x a jockey...so I cannot wack them..unless we do a 3/1..
they will still stuff it up...they cannot work together..
will end up wacking one another....

Have to laugh at ourselves...especially the punters...
the jockeys #$%^&*() one another...
they lie to us...
fall off the horses..
but what do we do...
WE STILL PUNT THEM....
I am an IT guy by profession..
degree in mathematics...
like my mate says...the jockeys got std 5...you have a degree... its the only profession where a graduate asks a std 5 guy for advice...
been friends with a jock for 30 years..
he told me..they gave us the std 8 certificates..we either had to have std 8 or be 16 in the previous dispensation....
not that std 5 makes these guys less...in fact I should have left school in std 5...then at least I would be as street wise as these guys..
I still get's outschemed by them..how clever can I be..
