A friend of mine assures me that he has seen Gavin Howes doing something similar with the weights at Milnerton to what happened at Greyville, and that incident was many years before the Greyville one.Clearly this is only heresay as he was obviously never caught at Milnerton, but if my friend is in fact correct then the Greyville incident is most definitely not an isolated '1 time' mistake.

He got caught at Greyville, but who knows how many times the man in fact got away with it.

The jockey club's operate independant.
When I reported a jockey to the Gauteng Jockey club for jumping off a horse at the start, the Gauteng jockey club said....(final leg of R250K/R7K double)

Sorry sir..The jockey relocated... yesterday to the cape...you must now lay the charge with the jockey club in the cape...we cannot help you..

hence on that basis..your jockey can apply at the gauteng jockey club..they cannot refuse him..

if they do..I will take them to court and close them down...

see how this bites them in the ass...

I don't think the comparison between prosecuting jockeys with crooked accountants, lawyers, rapists, criminals etc in this case holds water.

If an accountant is convicted of something he will lose his membership with SAICA and never practice again. A laywer will be disbarred, I would assume a rapist lose their proffesional status. Their respective prison sentences has nothing to do with this debate.

Why should a jockey be any different? Surely he/she must lose their license permanently.

Racing is a game where owners, trainers and punters entrust hard cash with these guys to perform honestly and without prejudice. If you invested your cash with someone and they were caught up in investment fraud deliberately cheating you/someone else would you expect that person to serve a few months and hey presto back to the investment world again.

The point is people who are entrusted to serve the wider public are subject to more stringent ethics, rules, governance than regular jobs. There can never be 2nd chances and if you dont have the integrity to not make the mistake in the first place then go find another profession where mistakes and cheating is forgiven.

Being warned off for life is the only punsishment and deterent in my book...

I say give the man a second chance..yes he did wrong and got caught..but hes paid for it..I dont know him at all but I would certainly support a plea to let him race again.

As many say on this thread..others have prob done worse and got away with it

Isnt giving people second chances what SA is all about?

By the way and off the topic you guys should read the latest Lancet Journal on the state of healthcare in SA..worldwide its by far the worst in many categories incl HIV, TB, Infant mortality rate and malnutrician..there are bigger things to worry about than keeping a guy unemployed..surely

....If you invested your cash with someone and they were caught up in investment fraud deliberately cheating you/someone else would you expect....

on that basis all the companies (CEO, CFO, CIO) trading under the financial index (JSE) belongs in jail...?????

we putting the "marietjie's" of this world away...
what do you think these companies run..honest businesses....
do you think their auditors care...
Audit firm to company...catagory A audit firms...JSE LISTED COMPANIES...

sir we will have to qualify your balance sheet because you dont have checks and balances in place..throw words such as "non-repudiation..segregation of duties" around..

company CEO, CFO, CIO..well we surely cannot have our balance sheet qualified..share price will drop..pension funds will sell block shares..management will be fired..our bonus.....

Audit firm..we have an IT divison that specialises in this..let them come onboard...fix it..then we will not qualify the balance sheet..R40million for the year + extra for management visits at weekly meetings..

current rates

R2050 per hour for partner
min R680 per hour for pretty girl from varsity with laptop, risk analysis program, and kelly girl skills...

reality...the auditors cant fix the problem...because there was/is no problem...but they are scheming R40m every year...every year....+840 JSE listed companies...do the sums...

you care about a jock the schemed R100k....
make him rider of the month...

My apologies Eyesman, he probably called his mother in law! Why else would he have a mobile behind the tractor at the start??

GAVIN HOWES WARNED OFF
An Inquiry Board, chaired by Advocate D N
Beasley SC, found Jockey Gavin Howes guilty of
committing a fraudulent act with regard to his
weight which resulted in his mount,
GREENWOOD, carrying less weight than it
should have when it ran in the 7th race at Greyville
on 29 March 2003.
The inquiry was finally completed after it had
been postponed four times for various reasons.
On at least two occasions Jockey Howes failed
to obtain legal representation when he had stated
that he was going to. The Inquiry was also delayed
after Howes needed medical treatment. The delays
resulted in The Jockey Club imposing an interim
suspension on Howes until the inquiry had been
finalised.
According to the evidence presented by The Jockey
Club, Howes had weighed out and then removed
the weight from his saddle bag and hid it in a
drain in the underground tunnel from the weighing
room to the parade ring. Presumably, he intended
to collect it again when he came back.
The Inquiry Board considered the offence to be
particularly serious in that it was an intentional
and deliberate attempt to defraud the public, and
warned jockey Howes off.

You are incorrect, cell phones were specifically banned for jockeys during race meetings, and a cell blocker was installed in the jockey room.
