Why should someone who was patently looking to defraud other people for the sole purpose of his personal gain be entitled to be given another chance. His intent is malicious,it's not a mistake. We all make mistakes, but it is the intent involved that seperates one case from the next.

Gavin Howes was a good rider in his day,who rode top horses and obviously was making a comfortable living at some point in his life at least, and it was his responsibility as the invidual to take care with the money he earned.

There are only two scenarios as to why he committed what can only be termed a crime, and that is he did it out of pure greed,or he was desperate as he had squandered the plentyful money that he had earned previously.I am not sure why anyone should have sympathy for him in either case.

If you feel he deserves another chance, employ him,or don't you trust him now?

So malicious intent on someone's part is of little consequence then?

Most people who are given a second chance generally require a third,4th and 5th chance somewhere down the line to.It's called an habitual offence, something that is clearly the case if my friend is in fact correct when he says he saw Howes do it previously. Is this fact meaningless?

I don't know about other cases. This topic was started by a friend of someone who has been warned off for life.Comparing one case to another is unfair as each case has it's own merits and circumstances. The general theme on this topic seems to be that this individual deserves a second chance. My question is simply why?

I have pointed out that a friend of mine has confirmed that he has seen Howes do it previously. That confirms(even if it is heresay),that GH is an habitual offender,he may have in fact done this a hundred times at a cost of millions of rands to the betting public. He was however only caught once, which considering the intent on his part cannot deem it a mistake but a deliberate attempt to steal for his own benefit.

For someone to be given a second chance there surely have to be mitigating circumstances of some sort.

Please tell me what they are in this case.

we give it to the jock's..they get tired by race 5...and races 1600m and up..
the horses are fine..have always been..

read the computerform comments..

lost position 300m from home..
bumped 300 from home...
had to check 300 from home...

if it were racing cars..who would be the guilty party...the car..or the DRIVER..

My take on this, Howes was heavily in debt and after being caught, tried to commit suicide. Its sad but I reckon that probably added to the life time ban verdict ....
