PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: First nominations for Summer Cup

DATE
: Monday 21 September 2009

RELEASED BY
: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited

RUNNERS from the yards of Mike de Kock and Charles Laird fought out the finish of last year’s Summer Cup and the pair looks set to dominate this race yet again. Between them they train 14 of the 37 nominations for the R2-million event to be run over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 28 November.
While last year’s winner, Rudra, is not among the entries, De Kock has named Forest Path, Bouquet-Garni, Autumn Frost, Amber Fort, Rich Strike and Meet At Malamala for this year’s race.
Forest Path won the SA Classic this year and also finished third in the Vodacom Durban July. Bouquet-Garni won the SA Derby at Turffontein while Meet At Malamala is highly rated by the yard but injured himself when running third to Horatio in a Progress Plate in February.
Laird trains last year’s runner-up, Smart Banker, who will be looking to go one better this time around. Joining the son of Strike Smartly on the list of nominations are Likeithot, Senor Versace, Dan De Lago, Eight Street, Crown Of Power, Rudi Rocks and the unbeaten Oracy, who has not raced since winning the Gauteng Guineas in February.
Sean Tarry has also indicated that he is hungry to win this Grade 1 event and he too has entered six runners. Heading them up is veteran Buy And Sell, along with Aslan, Night Ritual, Ray Sauce, Vertical Takeoff and Regal Ransom.
Geoff Woodruff has named Champions Challenge runner-up Aluminium, Bien and the highly regarded Dealsdunn. While he has been dominant on the sand, Dealsdunn has proved he can win on the turf.
Second entries close at 11am on Monday 12 October with final entries at 11am on Monday 2 November. The weights will be announced that day and final declarations need to be in by 11am on Monday 16 November
The draws and final field announcement will take place on Wednesday 18 November.

Dan de largo is the better of the two.

However..

I will be backing the MDK runners..

Which one..
doubt if they(the stable) know......yet..
Which ever one shapes..(e)erste (p)erd (o)or die wenstreep....

will be a repeat of RUDRA..
just missed it on July too..

but he will win this too..
further than 1600 meters...

the rest make up the field..including Dan de Largo and Oracy..also ran...

PHUMELELA MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT: Sansui group to sponsor Summer Cup

Horseracing and tote betting company Phumelela is proud to announce that Sansui, a global brand and a world leader in consumer electronics, is to sponsor the R2-million Summer Cup to be run over 2000m at Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg on Saturday 27 November.
The race, one of the “Big 4” on the South African racing calendar along with the Vodacom Durban July, the J&B Met and Champions Day, will be titled the Sansui Summer Cup.
“This is fantastic news for horseracing and I am very excited,” said Phumelela’s Sales Executive Clyde Basel. “To get a sponsor of Sansui’s calibre is a huge win for horseracing and together with Prime Media Sport, we at Phumelela are looking forward to turning the Sansui Summer Cup into a mega social and horseracing event.”
JSE-listed Phumelela recently entered into a partnership with Primedia Sport to market and promote the sport of thoroughbred horseracing, in terms of which Primedia Sport is responsible for the marketing and promotion of the Summer Cup and the sale and provision of hospitality on the raceday.
The Summer Cup is nearly as old as Johannesburg itself and has a rich and fascinating history. It was first run in 1887, a year after the dusty mining camp that was to become Johannesburg sprang up on the farm Turffontein following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand.
The list of past winners reads like a who's who of racing and includes Pamphlet (1917), Lenin (1940), Cuff Link (1963), Caradoc (1966), Home Guard (1970) and, of course, Java and Elevation who both pulled remarkable hat tricks in the famous race. Lenin won the event three years running from 1956 and Elevation repeated his feat from 1972-74.
In more recent years trainer Mike de Kock, whose exploits in Dubai, Hong Kong and the UK, have made him internationally famous, has made the race his own and his charge Rudra gave him a record seventh victory in the event last year.
De Kock nominated six runners at the first-entry stage for this year’s race including Grade 1 SA Classic winner Forest Path, who went on to finish third in the Durban July. A total of 37 nominations were received at the initial entry stage with second entries due at 11am on Monday 12 October and final entries at 11am on Monday 2 November. The draws and final field announcement will take place on Wednesday 18 November. Entries for the Sansui Summer Cup are (trainers in brackets):
