TRAINER MR F J (FRITZ) ROUX

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that an Inquiry was held at its offices in Port Elizabeth on Thursday, 10 December 2009, when Mr Fritz Roux was charged with a contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the person responsible for the horses BAND OF BROTHERS and HIPPODROME at the time when specimens taken from these horses after they had participated in the 4th and 8th races at Arlington Racecourse on 25 September and 9 October 2009 respectively, disclosed upon analysis the presence of 16â-Hydroxystanozolol, an anabolic steroid, which is a prohibited substance in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority.

Taking into consideration Mr F J Roux’s previous contraventions of this same Rule over a period of four years, the Inquiry Board imposed a penalty of a warning off. However, because Mr Roux has the right of appeal against the penalty, its implementation is suspended pending the outcome of an appeal, if such is timeously lodged by him.


By reason of an interim suspension imposed on Mr F J Roux on 6 November 2009, which stays in place pending the finalization of an appeal, he is not allowed to race any horses trained by himself.

To overcome this impediment, the owners of several horses which have been nominated to race at Fairview Racecourse today, have registered change of stables and these horses are now being trainer by Mr J S (Kobus) Roux, who will henceforth be the responsible Trainer in respect of these horses.

It's overdue that testing of anabolic stereoids were changed to permit its use.

I was told that anabolic steroids do not show up after about 3 weeks or so (subject to correction).

If so, how many other trainers can be using it & getting away?

Does this explain horses that are suddenly heavily backed, win and then disappear, or, never win/run again?

What then is the point of even taking action against F Roux if he can just pass his horses onto JS Roux if i am not mistaken JS Roux has also had problems???
And how long are the steroids going to stay active in the above mentioned horses and should there not be a time off for the steroids to clear out of their bodies?
This is just another advent in racing that makes it so seedy.
What about all the punters???
The problem is people like F Roux and all the other trainers that have been caught should not be allowed near horses as it is obvious that they are inept as HORSE TRAINERS because if u resort to drugging then u obviously cannot train horses.
In any case by administering all these steroids trainers have just leveled the playing field and now its not up to the best horseman and horse but is up to the best drug administrator and best drugged horse .This is unacceptable to me as an owner i don't want to win with a horse that has been drugged or boosted with steroids and maybe owners should also be held responsible then they would be sure to check their trainers.

Stop moaning, don't worry about horses, ethics or form , back lucky numbers like other Phumelela addicts

Inquiry - jockey Robbie Hill

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held on
Thursday 10 December 2009, Jockey Robbie Hill was charged with a
contravention of Rule 62.2.3, in that whilst riding FIRST WALTZ, in Race 9
at the Vaal Racecourse on Tuesday 24 November 2009, he failed to ride this
horse out by putting his hands down approximately eight strides before the
finish line, thereby costing him fourth place.
Mr Hill pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Inquiry Board found Mr Hill guilty and imposed a suspension of riding in
race meetings for a period of one month.
Jockey Hill has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.




Inquiry – workrider Mr Abraham Makhubo

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that an inquiry held on Friday 11 December 2009, Workrider Abraham Makhubo was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.3 in that whilst riding EL KAPITAINE in Race 5 at the Vaal Racecourse on 3 December 2009, Mr Makhubo failed to ride this horse out to the end of the race, losing second position and finishing third.
Mr Makhubo pleaded guilty to the charge.
The Inquiry Board found Mr Makhubo guilty and imposed a suspension from riding in Workrider races for a period of two months.
Mr Makhubo has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.

am not calling for legalisation of drugs (harmful or whatever).

There are trainers that train totally free of drugs, and others, who cannot do without a needle or vet (vitamins, electro-lysis, pain/injury, etc). Then there are those who resort to 'muti' & other drugs (painkillers, etc) in an attempt to enhance performance on the track...and even stage a coup.

Consider also: at least 90% of owners & trainers are not in the game for the love or interest of the horse. As noted on another thread, how many can account for the whereabouts of a runner once it's retired?

Could someone tell us what is so BAAAAD about anabolic steroids? Is it that harmful (short or long term)? Is it beneficial (in specific quantities & under certain circumstances)? Are there different types of steroids?

Let's hear about the prognosis and pathological reports, etc.

EPO - makes the blood go like mud..too may red blood cells..internal organ failure
1600meters or more......but it makes them stay..400meters from home..pull the wip..foot flat to the board...they get a second wind..outstay/sprint the field..

Besides us, is there a vet or NHA official who could throw specific light on this topic.

It is in the interests of the racing public to be better informed.

When I was in Rosetta during the early 70's, I used to vist Harry Barnett's stud farm (Springvale, I think).

The manager used to tell me that Harry would not lease his horses to certain trainers 'cos when the fillies came back, they turned out to be barren 'cos of all the goo they stuffed the horse with!

Are there breeders out there with similar experiences; mares barren or throwing foal/s pre-maturely after they come from certain (if not leading) stables?

a process that takes several days...
hence when we have a holiday during the week...
no testing can be done...we run short of days..
why dont you guys get the jockey club to put the testing process down on this site..
step by step...process by process and the duration of each step and the duration between steps...

guess than a new world will open...and you will see that you have been had..
all along..
why not have a website open to the public..
to follow each sample's flow thru the steps...
put the horse's name on the sample..

guess most of the major sponsors will withdraw then..
is it not part of the agreement that they do not want any negative publicity such as doping..
hence they will not take the chance and withdraw the sponsorship
