Scotia,As I have said many times....the tote IS a betting exchange...just diffirent types of bet...they facilitate bets between punters.
Insofar as tipping is concerned, either you have them or you don't - that is the choice...to have them but with a dishonest agenda is surely not advocated by anybody here!
And as I see it,the most relevant issue,as pointed out by Magic,is that nobody would be buying a saftote product from a third party unless the saftote delivery was crap!

If you are paying someone to to sell beds they must sell your beds not the competions. Simple. Daryl must create value for the company that employs him and he can do this buy selling their product not the opposition. The betting world team have their own show where they can sell fixed odds

100% Rob that's my concern - the product is shaky as it is so to suggest a better product can only damage the company futher hence my fear.(they have lost my small turnover do they wish to lose more customers ?)

Perhaps, Mr H, but I think you exaggerate the relevance of the stakes pot in most peoples's lives. Sad, but true.

you see magic that's what has been drummed into my head that local tote turnover on local races pays for the bulk of racing operations so perhaps I'm a victim of a slick marketing strategy. I wish I knew the truth!

I believe that the stakes model will have to change for racing to survive.
The sport of kings started with kingdoms racing against each other and putting up the stakes.
No doubt the peasants started to wager with each other......I wonder at what point royalty decided to start stealing part of their betting pool to provide the stakes?
And now the stakes provided by the "kings",as nomination fees, are given to the RA so don't even make it to the stakes pot!

You are spot on, Mr H. Betting turnover drives racing. Which is why the shoddy product and the couldn't-give-a-shit attitude of the Tote makes me despair. They are driving their customers away and it is a problem that demands a far deeper solution than begging non-owners to stick with them for the benefit of owners. I wouldn't buy a crap bed just because the store is going broke. Sorry, but that just isn't my problem.

Owning a racehorse is a privilege.
By this I mean you secure yourself a horse and a trainer and boom... you are eligible to go to racetracks you never paid for and run for money you never contributed to.
I'm with Magic all the way, why should punters give a shit about stakes? Why should they care how much money Sun Int. makes, even though it's them who give it?
Any "punter" who gives a shit about stakes has been brainwashed by the racing operators.
I hope the people who continually cry about stakes are owners and not punters. You punters are already losing 1/4 billion rand per year to fund those already well-to-do owners. BTW, no one I know who owns horses would stop if there was a 10% stakes reduction...we already do our tom so what does it matter?
When I have brought people into racing, not 1 has ever asked me what the stakes are. Not once.
The racing operators own a cash-cow (by law) to fund the game. They have NEVER given 1 continental for the punters, and they have taken the punter for granted forever! If they are short of money, they did it to themselves.

yes, short enough of money so that they have to rely on their competition to sponsor big races and their even bigger competition (bookies) to take advertising space on their tv.....we're heading for an inverse operation....sooon

The Tote is an out dated service that will eventually die, There is no value on the tote with a huge takeout that they have they will never be able to compete. Bookie have become more competitive because they are now competing with the likes of Betfair and Inter bet. I think the only way forward for The P/Gold Circle is to be the first to open up a betting exchange and be the Betfair of South African racing. If they can dominate the exchange market in South africa they will have a chance of going forward, if not there pools will get smaller and smaller as technology improves.

Spot on russelldavie, exchanges are coming..... PGE merely need to decide whether to participate or not!
This situation reminds me of the Nat government trying to keep out TV...it's just a matter of time.
