ABC I know Smiley well and you can maybe refer him to me again -Facts is he is /was one of the better callers around most of his facts in his letter is correct he indeed is a very pleasant individual the only problem I got is when people play the race card wake up Smiley the simple fact is that in racing if you are not part of the selected crew doesnt matter if u r pink green blue u r going no where -Smiley is a very knowlegable guy of sport and racing in general in comparison whith Cohen I must question who will contribute the most to racing ,without a doubt Smiley .Smiley stick to what you are good at stay away from the race card the easiest way to lose all your supporters

@bicnic:

I fully agree when you say 'the only problem I got is when people play the race card '.

Let's look at it from the other side.

Why did Larry take Peter Naidoo (an Indian, albeit, sellout black!) with; not a racist presentation making all the hulllaboo about transformation?

Why did they have to constantly re-assure the Parliamentary about 'race'? Isn't that 'playing the race card?'

So, when a white man talks racism to justify his fluid underfoot conditions, it's ok?

When a black makes reference to it (and Smiley's case is clearly one of naked racism as Nico is accommodated with 'donations' whilst Smiley was not!)

It's time many white S Africans also removed their 'coloured' blinkers!

I am also getting gatvol of the reactions of some whites who are cynical or ignore totally such threads and let them die a natural death!

Amandla!

Umlilo exactly what I say you surely understand whats going with the NHRA and RA there is people in charge with agendas of their own and I can assure you they will use and abuse whoeever to maintain their status immaterial of race or creed ,regarding Nico's donations I have commented on other threads and totally agree -Smiley is a very talented man I have had many a conversation with him and what is funny in this instance that he should play the race card because over many a discussion it was never a issue I even offered my profesional services for free to him at the time in support in terms of his unfair dismissal claim which involved Graham Hawkins and even then it was not about race ,I think the issue at hand is he good enough or not and my personal opinion is that Smiley will be a asset to horseracing and make it a fun thing again.

Its hard to believe that Smiley is not given a chance,since the apartheid error is over,or is it?I have had the priveledge of having Smiley call a few winners for me in my career,and believe me theirs nothing wrong ,plus he can spice up the commentry the same way that Mike Azzie can promote his horses,nice gift to have this 'gift of the gab'.

Well it's his side of the story only and we all know or should know that there often many sides, agree with Pirates with regard the modesty chirp however. I for one couldn't bear his commentaries, ridiculous raves and rants at times when calling races made me write to the Sporting Post back in 2000 that Smiley was a "paluka" of a race caller. Just my opinion of course. Moving on, the natural thing to do nowadays when one doesn't get your way is call the system racist. Don't get me wrong as there are still many obstacles to clear and it's by no means a one way street with many "whites" "coloureds" " Indians" also experiencing a host of injustices. But to get a radical like Buthela involved is simply scrapping the barrel, the guy is probably the biggest racist of them all and hates anything that resembles a lighter shade of colour.

I must say after being subjected to the most appauling commentary of the Summer Cup, I would gladly have Smiley back any day. He may have gone a little overboard at times but he added a liitle something special to his commentaries.

It is quite sad that this situation has had to go to these extremes.
