The Sharks were awesome in the last 50 min...Bismarck was brilliant.

Very happy for the Cheetahs scoring the winning try in the 83rd min.

So that was the weekend action :

CHIEFS vs BRUMBIES

Nailbiter. Not in my wildest dreams could I have predicted that the Brumbies would run the Chiefs as close as they did.

I actually thought they were unlucky to lose.

If you took 1/6 about the Chiefs you certainly earned the 16% return on your money.

For one moment I thought my draw prediction was about to be realised.

STORMERS vs BLUES

Another h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e game of rugby involving a South African side.

The Blues looked thoroughly disinterested for much of the match. Their senior All Blacks, in particular, were petulant and ineffective.

Stormers youngsters continue to impress.

Detected a bit of a flutter when the Blues decided to play and scored two quick, late tries.

I guessed totally wrong but remain unconvinced by the home side.

HURRICANES vs HIGHLANDERS

I have to repeat that the Highlanders are the current FORM Super 15 side. At the very least you should have mopped up 12/1 or 10/1 long term.

Although the match was tight the Highlanders always appeared most likely. As matches between these two sides historically average a winning margin of 1 point the Highlanders won by an historically wide margin!

I have now seen enough of the Otago franchise to believe that they can go all the way to the playoffs this year.

Nothing much wrong with the Hurricanes either. At home they will roll more than they lose to.

WARATAHS vs WESTERN FORCE

Spook. Bomb. Call it what you will – the force delivered a blow to the Waratahs comparable to the Cheetahs victory over the same franchise a year ago.

Good luck to them. But don’t expect them to repeat the procedure too often. Except when at home to their 'bunnies' - the Crusaders!

SHARKS vs REDS

I have repeatedly advocated sports betting because there are fewer variables likely to upset your calculations.

One issue which all punters need to be cogniscent of is WEATHER. The other uncontrolled variables in rugby are yellow or red cards and injuries.

The Sharks were grateful beneficiaries of all three in the late match on Saturday evening.

Let’s ignore the yellow card as that was self inflicted. But the Reds were on track – despite the weather – for an easy victory when a spate of injuries deprived them of pivotal players. Most notable losses were both flyhalf options; who also served as their goal kickers.

Having racked up 17 unanswered points against a strong wind the Reds were on track for a comfortable victory. But injuries to their major playmakers conspired against them and they turned at halftime with a reduced lead and minus the skills set required to control the territory and convert goal kicking opportunities into points.

I can only conclude that this Sharks side is willing but rubbish. I would suggest you now grab the opportunity to back the Reds long term as they showed more than enough on Saturday to suggest they will be there when it counts. Remember – Quade Cooper will also return later in the campaign.................

REBELS vs CHEETAHS

This gets my nomination as the most entertaining match of the weekend.

It’s a pity the Cheetahs usually battle to maintain concentration and discipline as they play the most positive rugby of all the South African franchises. I also question their conditioning as they almost always struggle in the final quarter.

Nevertheless both of these sides contributed to a memorable match.

Once again I thought they were headed towards a ( now very overdue ) draw. But credit to the Cheetahs. After earlier looking to be odds on for another unecessary narrow defeat they kept the ball alive for two pulsating minutes after the hooter had sounded to score a magnificent try and clinch the points.

This side is better than it believes itself to be. It has the skills to perform at a level about equivalent to the Highlanders. Such a pity that it so often lies down and dies without a whimper after establishing an early lead.

SUMMARY : Week four followed an identical pattern to weeks 1, 2 and 3. Four home wins and three away wins. But finding the win 'away' for the Western Force was the killer which should have stuck pretty much everyone out!

A ‘full house’ of action awaits us this weekend. The card has a ‘banana peel’ look to it now that desperation is just starting to creep in.

BLUES vs HURRICANES

The Blues are in disarray and no amount of posturing is going to help. I would be inclined to buy into the prospect of a resurgence were it not for the injury list. The loss of players such as Keino and Toeava is terminal. To say nothing of their indiscipline and subsequent suspensions.

There’s going to be a good slice of needle in this match as ex-Hurricanes players such as Nonu & Weepu line up against their old team mates for the first time. ( Nonu was pretty diabolical last week whilst Weepu still appears to be carrying the residue of post World Cup celebrations on his frame ).

If desperation translates into a winning result then the Blues will win. Not for me.

I believe coach Hammett has forged a pretty useful side here and I take the Hurricanes to win away from home against the odds.

REBELS vs WESTERN FORCE

Do we really care? Toss a coin.

WARATAHS vs SHARKS

Sharks start their road trip. Historically they have been quite effective away from Durban.

Yet I see their last effort as a typical example of the ill-considered reporting by the South African press; who are now starting to use positive hyperbole when describing them. Dream on , boys.

Yes – they came back from 0-17 to win against the Reds. Yet nobody seems to be asking : Why?

Well – any side that suffers the combination of a yellow card and the loss of both the first choice ( actually second choice ) flyhalf AND the replacement is going to struggle. Particularly when those losses incorporate the goal kicking ability as well.

Dull the Waratahs might be but the Sharks also produce long patches of uninspiring play. This is going to be a bit of an arm wrestle.

I am not passing the buck when I call it as a coin toss but if you forced me to choose I would go for the home side.

CRUSADERS vs CHEETAHS

The Crusaders will win this one ONLY because deep down the Cheetahs don’t really believe they can beat the home side at home.

BRUMBIES vs HIGHLANDERS

I am on record as saying that I would follow the Highlanders until beaten. No change there but................

Last week the Highlanders showed the first signs of the fatigue that their style of play inevitably produces.

The Brumbies are a little fresher and were desperately unlucky to lose last weekend to the Chiefs. In Jake White they have a coach equipped to meet and match the style of play for which the Highlanders are now well known.

This should be a meat grinder but I feel the Highlanders have enough to shade it.

BULLS vs REDS

At time of writing there was uncertainty about the makeup of the Reds side.

Common sense suggests the Bulls should win this one but I am less than sure for the following reasons :

The Reds were in no way overpowered by the Sharks up front last week so there is no reason why they should be easy beats against the Bulls pack. In fact – I actually believe they have a edge in their loose trio.

Ironically the Bulls appear to have an unusual advantage (against an Australian side) in the backline. Whether they get sufficient dominance up front remains an issue as the current Bulls pack is no world beater. As the 2011 Stormers will attest – the Reds have the ability to slug it out up front if a war of attrition developes. In fact – given their current backline problems they might prefer a tight match.

I tip the Bulls providing Morne Steyn is on target with his goalkicking.

LIONS vs STORMERS

The Stormers do well against the Lions in Super Rugby – both at and away from home. But 1/3 looks like madness to me.

The Stormers backline has yet to fire so they are going to have to subdue and penetrate up front where the Lions should be competitive.

There is a toxic combination at work here : The Lions with their penchant for doing a couple of really stupid things during a match and the Stormers with their ‘structured to sleep’ style of play. As well as no plan B.

I can’t say that I care who wins. But I don’t think I would want to give the Lions a 8,5 point start as suggested by the handicap.

I like two handicaps for the weekend - Blues(-7.5) beat Canes and Crusaders -21
then outright 7-10 Highlanders

I like the Hurricanes Garrick..in Super 15 this is my team, in terms of 'making money' mostly on handicapping though.
