This hits the nail.
Hotline says look at HK, no bookies and they flying, perhaps we should look at the USA too then, no bookie and crashing. Betfair will own US racing in 5 years is my prediction.
JustinV is 100% correct, it is the smallest punters subsidise the owners who race. No punter has more than R1000 on the tote except for exotics.
The owners of the tote sold out local racing when they put on harness racing. It is clear they see the future as gambling on overseas and sports. What hypocrites to cry to support the tote when they piss on the small punters. Certainly all the conversation at a big event recently was all about overseas co-mingling and overseas travel.
My local tote is a shit hole I barely venture into to buy a card, and there is a greater than 70% chance they won't have the card for tomorrow, and a 50% chance they don't have for today.
The truth of the matter is punters from my size upwards, have decided to boycott the tote. It's not even neutral anymore. I stopped playing with the tote after I heard one of the directors got a kickback from saftote on turnover, and while I don't know if it's true I mistrust the system enough to believe it could be.
I have very small interests in a few horses left mostly because it is too expensive and partly because I'm bored with it. I have bad horses, and the worse they are, the more they can run. The better they are, the less races. Even I can't bare the fact the the worse my horse is, the more it earns.
But the more racing educates us on overseas racing, the more gambling will take place on what they offer elsewhere. One certainty is that local will become more and more unimportant. Or have I read this wrong?

Is this the cause for the price to drop from eg, R2.60 to R1.10 in a matter of 5 min? How much money does it take to change the price like that?

After 40 yrs of punting and frustation at the service I get at the tote I now mainley bet online with Hollywood [2.1/2 yrs]
I've had my TELEBET ACC for +- 12 yrs which I now only play pick 3s with [ONLY because H/W don't have it]
If there is 100 TAB OUTLETS in the W/Cape,I have easily visited 90% of them
Nowadays I go to the tote only to dep or withdraw or to buy the S/POST
MY REASONS:
Indifferent service, Dirty, run down facilities,No incentives for Punters
ZEVENWAGHT used to be my favourite tote[I spent Friday eve's and the whole of Sat and Sundays there}
While at least 80% of punters smoke, they have 10% of space or stand outside
In WINTER it RAINS in.in SUMMER you SUFFOCATE
Tellers thinking they doing punters a favour
These young unprofessional and sometimes PLAIN STUPID {SWAAR WOORD} that either don't know or when it suits them don't want to know ENGLISH or AFRIKAANS!
SHIT! WHY HAVE I PUT UP WITH THIS FOR SO LONG?????????
THAT'S why I don't frequent totes anymore,
So, because of what I get elsewhere, I'll support the open bet(tu)(

Why would I put my money into a pool where I have to pay between 18% and 25% as a deduction when foreigners who bet into the same pool can get 10%+ rebates on the same pool.

One of the strange truths of racing is that owners will go on about the tote being the only game in town, but every owner I have ever known, place their outright bets ONLY on the books ,and use the tote for exotics only.
Those that don't bet are involved in the take out only, and I have never seen one effort by owners to improve the lot of the tote punter.

The open bet is NOT a fixed win or place bet. I am sure that most of you know that but in case a few don't.

you guys are mixing poor management and greed with the fact that a tote only system works for horseracing.
The fact that your local tote depot is shite is a refelction of the contempt that the controling bodies have for the punter, the reason that the bookies offer a better ambiance is they are shrewd businessmen that recognise the vallue of a customer. They give a bit (nice food and seating) and take alot.
