Ah, but we forget that Horse Racing was the only LEGAL form of gambling in those days. People are still buying NEW cars, not only VWs but BMs & Mercs and also gambling at Casinos so it is all relevent.
I have been INVESTING (gambling) on the ponies since 1966 and still do today as to me it is still the ONLY GAME IN TOWN.

Ascot, Bulawayo, had the Forecast which was today's Exacta, light years ahead of SA's Exacta. Then the same Ascot introduced the Tierce, also light years ahead of SA's Trifecta. And all this WITHOUT computerisation - all manual until about 1979. Yip, "back in the days......."

Who remembers the Bi Pot, an exotic between the PA & P6 which was only on Vaal racing. One had to pick a horse to run first or second in 6 races, it was a popular bet with good dividends, this was before fractional betting.
Later there was the Superfecta, first 6 past the post in exact order on a designated race, also huge payouys.
Yes 'DACK IN THE DAYS' when all these bets were available the small punter could outlay a small amount with a chance to win big, like at the Casinos, how things have changed for the worse in Horse Racing.

Who can remember the days when you had to mark your betting ticket with an X on a carbonized duplicate ticket.
The operator franked the ticket, retained the original and gave you the duplicate.( in KZN). not sure in other centres.

Back in the days
do you guys remember the dual between Main Man and Model Man I think it was the Champions Cup or something @ Clairwood but I stand to be corrected
still today regarded as one of the best duals between two champions, can not remember who the jockeys was but I can remember them going hammer and tongs over the last 400m with both jockeys giving their all, what a race?
