Via Africa - highest rated 3yo
12 years 6 months ago
What a run Via Africa against What A Winter.
This was a great feat for a 3yo filly, because this is a very hard knocking race. What A Winter (120) had this race stone cold unless one of the 3yo could find 15 to 20 lbs each. The rest didn't really look to have scope to improve. Via Africa came in rated 100 and trying a Gr1 against older males for her 6th start.
She was beaten 0.75 L at WFA by What A Winter (120) and beat Cap Alright (110) by 4.25 L receiving only 5 lbs sex allowance after Weight For Age allowance.
So if Capetown Noir (110) is the highest rated 3yo, then he's just been topped.

without whingeing too much...I felt that given a little more head from the start....she may have beaten What a Winter (brilliant run over a distance that is not his optimum)

I agree with you.
Fobes did not use her high cruising speed to his advantage in my opinion . ofcouse I am not a jockey.

if she could have gone much quicker? its one thing to be quick and pacey and have a high cruising speed against fillies at gr3 level..it is another at gr1 WFA level..im sure if she could have gone quicker and still had enough for the end then alec wouldve let her rip more..after all after val de ra and now via afrika im sure he knows how to ride these types

They were going flat out from the jump.Cap Alright has the fastest gate speed in CT and he battled to match her pace.....superb run from a young 3 year old.Too many negative comments re her run and the jocks ride....she couldn't have gone quicker and he didn't stop riding her.Beaten by a champion sprinter.
