After Lovestruck won the politician stakes GIVING WEIGHT to his fellow 3yo's that day , surely the next step would have been the Cape derby as the politician is the trial race for the derby . Why do i recall this , read on
I will never forget , Marcus was asked by the presenter on his thoughts of running LS in the derby and the horses stamina Marcus expressed that he felt the horse had stamina doubts . Then the trainer present was asked , his reply was , he felt it would not be a good idea to take on capetown noir as running close to him would cause LS's rating to be hiked which would make it difficult for the horses future and that CTN was a near certainty .
I heard the interview and thought , hell man horses are only 3 once in their life and after winning over 1800 giving weight all round surely the derby (at level weights) would be the logical route . Well , as we all now Ls missed the derby and CTNoir duly won it .
The thing is , the derby was won in a very slow time (probably the slowest in recent times) , since the overall time was slow i would assume that there was a lack of pace . Its a no brainer that runners with stamina doubts benefited . Which would have suited Ls (since it was percieved he had stamina doubts).
Seven out of 12 of the derby runners had been defeated by Lovestruck in the politician www.formgrids.com/subscriber/fgRaceResul...66,ZA&hs=LOVE+STRUCK CTnoir beat the same horses(at levels) by a lesser margin than Love struck did www.formgrids.com/subscriber/fgRaceResul...2KW400,ZA&hs=DYNAMIC .
I kept thinking , had Lovestruck run he may well have beaten CTnoir . It didn't matter to me though , i just had another giggle at the comments made by the jock and trainer when Lovestruck won the Politician stakes .
Good on the owner for insisting the horse run in the classic .
If i owned this horse and took advice not to run Ls in the Derby iwould have ben sooooooooo gutted after that race .

<
Just in case you were worried( I am sure you are not) I am not that way inclined. Besides even if I was he was so drunk I dont think he could even see me most of the time. Much of his shooters landed on the ground while he was trying to find his mouth. His fiance was very good( looking after him)

This has been an interesting read. As a current owner and having raced in a few yards over the past 15 years my humble opinion is as follows: A horse needs raw talent to go all the way but needs a skilled trainer to get it to perform consistently well or to get the big wins out of it.. This is not luck. mdk has an xfactor which cannot be denied. He gets them right on the day more times than not. Many other up and coming trainers are investing in their futures by traveling, researching etc in order to keep up with a dynamic ever- changing game. Veterinary advances, programming a horses path, using the right jocks, tuning the horse to the minute etc all come into play. Getting the coplete model right is what separates the high achievers from the others - not luck!
Too many small trainers do things the same way day in and day out and expect different results. They then use the crutch of being unlucky to have not got the BIG horse.
As for Lafferty, he is a great bloke who has done a great job with this horse. Yes, ups to Soma for producing him on the day but Paul has done all the prep with this horse. That said, as an owner, I think he should have sacrificed Dubai to be at Turffontein, irrespective of it being pre-planned.

Most smaller trainers do very well when they get a good horse. Just need that chance. Colin Lee, Pat Antelme, Gail Thompson, Jackie Gortons the Passmores plus many others of the older generation and Paul Gabsby, Paul Lafferty, Pat Lunn, Tony Rivalland, Alistair Gordon and many more of the present generation of small/medium size trainers have all had top/champions when they were given the oppotunity. Just let them find/get the right horse and see how well they do.

Love Struck’s triumph gave popular Durban trainer Paul Lafferty his first Grade 1 title – though he wasn’t there to see it, being in Dubai with the celebrating South African contingent.
Love Struck was among the favourites for the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Gauteng Guineas earlier in March, and finished in seventh, just 3.50 lengths behind the victorious Tellina that day. Instead of returning to his Summerveld base, he was kept on at Turffontein, in the yard of Joey Soma.
Starting at 22-1 this time, Love Struck was on the pace from the break. Sean Cormack positioned him just behind leader Gray’s Champ, with Francois Bernardus, No Worries, American Storm and Rock Of Arts in attendance. Tellina (15-10) travelled some eight lengths off the leader.
Inside the final 600m, Gray’s Champ relinquished the lead to Love Struck, who lit out for home.
Tellina, pulled to the centre of the track by Robbie Fradd, was soon a looming threat. The horses came together some 200m out, with the jockeys alive and all-action in the irons.
Cormack kept Love Struck to his task and won by the proverbial nostril, with commentator Clyde Basel saying it might be a dead-heat.
The picture gave it to the frontrunner, but Fradd quickly lodged an objection, claiming that Tellina had been struck across the nose by Cormack’s crop at a critical stage of the run-in.
The objection was overruled by the stipendiary stewards.
Gitiano (11-1) ran on into third and War Horse (28-10) completed the frame.

Most of you are talking out of context and don't know what you're talking about! Paul Lafferty did a great job getting the horse to where it is and all credit to him with the help of Joey Soma. None of you say anything when De Kock sends a horse to Ramsden and it wins a Gr1, and yet it has happened, and vice versa, Ramsden has sent horses up to De Kock and won races. Many trainers have also sent horses down to Eric Sands for the season and won races as well as up to Drier from the Cape and run them in their own names and won races. At the end of the day, it took all the original trainers hard work to get the horse to where it is and the "stand in tainer" just has to keep things going. Well done to Paul Lafferty and the owner. If it wasn't a KZN Trainer, no one would be saying anything.

10.1 Only the following PERSONS may train HORSES to run at RACE MEETINGS:
10.1.1 a TRAINER;
10.1.2 an ASSISTANT TRAINER who has, in terms of RULE 11.2.4, obtained the
permission of a STIPENDIARY STEWARD to act during the absence or illness of a
TRAINER who employs him;
10.1.3 an ASSISTANT TRAINER controlling a racing stable on behalf of his employer,
who shall be a TRAINER, and who shall have obtained permission in terms of
RULE 11.2.5;
10.1.4 a STABLE EMPLOYEE who has in terms of RULE 11.2.4 obtained the permission
of a STIPENDIARY STEWARD to act during the absence or illness of a TRAINER
who employs him;
10.1.5 a TRAINING PARTNERSHIP.
10.2 No one may act as a TRAINER unless and until such PERSON has been granted a
licence by the LICENSING BOARD. A licence shall not be granted to anybody
referred to in RULE 9.16.
10.3 No PERSON shall enter a HORSE for a RACE or run a HORSE in a RACE unless it
is trained by one of the PERSONS referred to in RULE 10.1. No HORSE shall be
eligible to run in any RACE unless it is trained by one of the PERSONS referred to in
RULE 10.
How is it possible that this horse was nominated by the Owner(In his own words he nominated this horse- He does not say he forced the trainer to do so) unless I do not understand this Rule? The only way he could have done so if he was an Assistant or Stable Employee - perhaps he is I don't know though. He would be acting "like a Trainer" which is a breach of rule 10.2
