Talking about coups
i reckon there are plenty that happen on the tote without horses shortening. Quartets and Pick 6's caught when it is near impossible to find winners. I have seen trainers take quartets bankering their 25/1 shot with 3 fields (big spend ) and with it roving (% taken but still big spend) Its almost as if there is "more" value in not declaring your hand and taking 50 000/2000 but rather R2000 qt banker x f x f x f

Jeez guys WTF !!! Ok back to the thread what about the late Michael Roberts an a horse called Grey Tiger owned by David Greenstone and stable companion called Day To Remember who opened any price while grey tiger opened FAV. Day To Remember I think was a first timer while Grey Tiger was already a winner . Day to Remember backed all the way in and shit in. Not sure if Mr Greenstone was all that happy but as they say That's Racing. Great Coup!

What about a coup that went wrong? Well, it looked like a coup that went wrong. Always remembered it. About three decades ago (phew) two quite good horses came out at Turffontein. One was Woodcutter and the other Unter Den Linden. Dont remember too much about the specific prices but Woodcutter opened up something like 8/10 and Unter Den Linden abt 7/2. In the half hour that led up to race time the money poured onto Unter Den Linden like the Vic Falls. In the end Unter Den Linden started abt 8/10 and Woodcutter 7/2. The result? Woodcutter downed Unter Den Linden.
And Horse Chestnut's win in the Met must have been some sort of a coup. Didnt his price go from 5/2 to 8/10 in 20mins?

One of the first coups that I can remember.London King and Free Enterprise both trained by L.J.Taylor raided Johannesburg many ,many moons ago and they both came home at long odds.

@ Pirates. Do you mean "Plotting A Coup" by Barrie Davies.
. I wish this book looks like my Bible. The latter still looks very new. In the "About The Author" section it says Barrie continued schooling at Amanzimtoti. You would like to borrow?
The publication seems to have been printed in Harare.
Some snippets from the book:
"...more horses win that have NO APPARENT FORM than favourites... IT IS NOT TO THE FORM BUT TO THE 'NON-FORM' THAT PUNTERS SHOULD BE LOOKING TO FIND WINNERS". Not so sure if this is true.
"...beware the decoy of horses shod in steel plates".
"Maiden horses are mostly the subject of coups where blinkers are involved".
"A coup can be set up by racing a horse over a distance too far or too short than its breeding would suggest is suitable".
"Most imported horses are primed for early success..".
"Beware of betting avalanches or 'gold rushes'".
"The Guinness Book Of Records is said to have rated this course (Bloemfontein)....... as the most crooked in the world!"
