Glad you are back Harry and the Goodman show would be great and help ABC with the dreaded "nameless posters " syndrome that stops people posting or replying.

Flash, you miss the point again.....
Here's the scenario - I buy a Var filly for R250 k as a yearling. The Owner pays up, all along and now, its about a month or so away from running. At home, the filly is really fast and working really well. OK , you with me so far ?
Now , lets take said Owner and give you two types of Owner, for this argument's sake - Owner A - not really a Punter. Owner B - A big punter. So, I would report to Owner A - "filly working nicely now, should run nicely first time in about a month's time" To Owner B - same report , but add in " should be worth a few Rand on".
But even before I have had the chance to phone the Owner, same Owner (and everyone else) hears about "Goosen's flying chestnut Var filly" This, surely cannot make either Owner happy. Flash, would you like to be that Owner ?
Now, before you come back and quote me out of context AGAIN, with the "betting blind" story about Punters, here's a thing or two -
1) Read AGAIN what I said about Punters/info etc
2) Your "inside info" stuck more Punters away than my silence would have.
3) Please dont you make Punters out to be idiots and then try and make me look like the guilty party. Every Punter would see the betting move for the first timer and then follow his/her punting instinct/form decision.
4) Please explain why it should be YOUR OWN money on first. And if it gets beat, who will be the first to go public, bleating, "they pulled the horse because their price was stolen ? Not you ? Not with your "inside info" ?
Without Punters, Racing is gone. I agree, which is why I go much more than the extra mile for Punters, whenever possible. But the same applies to Racing without Owners, Flash ! Which is why you should consider them too......

It's all sounds cloak and dagger if you ask me, and the biggest loser is always the game.
Just because you're a privileged owner does that make you entitled to a price before the general public? My opinion is no, but I'm not an owner so I can't be totally objective. There are no rights or wrongs, it's all about perspective but if information is leaked and bets are placed from rumours or whatever there should be no crying about it. It's everyman for themselves and if someone is mates with a groom, stable employee or jock and finds out the graft then good luck to them.
I'm a believer that inside information is fundamentally not good for the game and I have a problem saying that someone deserves privelege over someone else.
The ultimate solution is to do away with bookies so we can keep the money within the games funding structures. It will also eliminate all this crap about price and make the game more transparant. Unfortunely everyone puts themselves above the games welfare, and to me it's obvious that the most sustainable solution is to have one betting facility I.e the tote.

Saksy we would have hardly any owners if the owner who pays for the horse, feeds the horse ,pays the vet bills and farrier bills is not looked after by the trainer when it is time to run ...info can never be totally controlled by the stable and i agree it then becomes a free for all about price :S

The situation is not helped by accountants (they can no longer bee called bookmakers) shortening odds from 16/10 on a R500 bet...

hit the nail on the head the problem lies squarely with the bookmaking fraternity which was highlighted by gavin van zyl a few weeks ago in a winning interview...what confuses me is you have big bookmaking firms who have in excess of 30 shops and they only want to lay you no more than 20k of a horse antepost ...interbet for me has been a big negative for our bookmaking industry as prices shorten with pennys traded on it and IT IS BEING MANIPULATED ...bookies of 20 years ago layed bets 20 times bigger of what they layed today and the prices wouldnt shorten...

Len, do you really think we would have fewer owners if they couldn't get a punt on before the general public? I don't think it will make any difference.
The owner pays the bills because he has a chance of winning prize money. Who funds the prize money? The betting public do. So the owner expects to get inside info before the very people who will pay him his prize money. Does this sound right?
My point is that everyone is connected so instead of thinking that one person is entitled to something over another why not treat everyone equally? Oh I forget, greed and egos cannot possibly allow equality.
Why not try 'look after' your owner in other ways that don't compromise the integrity of the game? Maybe I live in cloud cuckoo land but hey we all have arseholes and opinions!
