It's happening more on Soccer now - When I go to Betex in Benoni the Nigerians show me tickets where they've won huge sums on that game. Hell there are so few Racing punters it's frightening - I have told some of the P people that they actually need to get these foreign gamblers onto racing but I've not seen it happen

When I go to place bets at Hollywood in Alberton the que's for the soccer bets is nearly out the door but you can walk straight up to a horse racing teller.

It was the champion horses that made racing interesting to the public. Horses like Sea Cottage, Sentinel, In Full Flight, Politician, Horse Chestnut, Pocket Power and Igugu amongst many others and I have not even mentioned Terence Millard!!!
That was whar good racing was all about and to think that RACE FIGURES DID NOT COMEDOWN in those days very dramatically.:S

i agree football is the alternative and very difficult to compete with. BUT you must also know that the marketing for football has no limit and been around for ages.. When watching an advert asking me for £2 a mont for starving lighties in god knows where , there is always one wearing a Barcalona shirt. That challenge will never go away as far as racing is concerned, casinos for me offer no challenge.
If i was in management in sa for sure there would be 5000 people at every single race meeting. At 1st that would be manufactured but after a certain ammount of time it would be organic. As for turnover i would sort it out in a jiffy, as the operator i would run an exchange (rob has mentioned this as well) with that master stroke i would KILL off a few bookies, the rest would eventually fall away as i took customer service to a new level.
Everyone would be entitled to a rebate based on turnover, including sipho who istead of a rebate would beer with any ticket presented over R20
i can go on and on.
My final masterstroke would be to employ JOURNALISTS, because we do have Millards, they just called de kock , S Khumalo, A Marcus and P Strydom

love your thinking Easy! I have made no secret of my thoughts on customer care and the lack of direct marketing of horseracing on its own.
But, honestly, when you are the Operator, your first job will be to get your application in, for your licence to read "exchange" and then the fun starts and then you will wait.....and wait.....and then know exacly why you live where you do right now.....and what "legislation" means over here nowadays....

Just a few well placed adverts in MAIN STREAM MEDIA would make a major difference!!

round and round the mulberry bush this story resurfaces again...it is no use taking comfort in hearing that horseracing turnover has decreased in other countrys especially if we have little or no idea what base theycome off so comparing makes no sense unless you have year on year figures from the last 20 years or so...however the fact remains that the industry namely gc and phum are CLEARLY NOT INTERESTED in dialogue with the very people who finance the industryt namely us mug punters...in any other customer driven industry this is number one on their list but not so with our phumgold they play the blame game on bookies open bet and what ever other excuse they can find....instead of looking outside look inside and ask what can we do to improve horseracing turnover because we cannot control what happens outside ....your customers ultimately will have the answers not all but many but phumgold they know better....hollywood dont do anything out the ordinary they do the basics for their customers and must thank the lord every day for phumgolds mediocrity .....last point is with the knowledge of sports betting and generally fixed odds betting becoming so massive HOW DID THE CURRENT GOLD CIRCLE BOARD SELL OUT ITS SHARE IN BETTINGWORLD?they will never replace this cashcow ever ...a superb masterstroke from phumelela

Well said Pirates ! Just my opinion ! Ill go check that out after my next vodka if I can find the bible or the dictionary? They don't give a shit about the gamblers who make the pools that pay the stakes to the owners who have to buy the horses and pay the trainers and the vets and everybody else. No doubt the abuse will flow flat out from all those who defend the operators. But then again it's here opinion so I'll respect that.
