Not a meeting goes by whereby this doesn't happen. Very weird.

So what do you read into this Durbs?

In Durb's defence, bookies are not in the business to give money away, so the drift is alarming and worrying from a punter's perspective. You could ask, was 5/10 a realistic opening price for starters, with hindsight, no. On another realistic note, maybe the horse didn't travel well, or like other visiting stable, it may need it's first run in the province. Lastly, the horse should drift because of support for another runner, if not, it takes a really brave person to back the drifting horse after an alarming drift. Ultimately, it will reach a price where punters believe it to be correctly priced and there will be some late money.

Personally, I wouldn't back the horse, but good luck to those who do.

When this happens in racing, you damned if you do (back the drifter), and you damned if you don't (back the drifter).

If you back the drifter at double or much more than the opening price, and it loses, then you really pissed with yourself saying, "I should have seen that coming". Likewise, if you don't back the drifter and it wins, you are equally pissed because the bookmakers planted that seed of doubt in your mind by drifting the horse, and you might have changed your selection, only to get shafted by the drifter which was your original fancy.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

But why only in South Africa do shoes always come off?

It's a South African custom - go shopping on a Saturday and you will see a few people(normally kids of all ages) walking around barefoot in the mall - We just don't like shoes

It's a serious matter I think. How come the authorities haven't looked into it?They see it doesn't happen overseas but it has been happening here for many many years. Can't they see that something is badly wrong with the quality of materials the farriers are using or maybe even our farriers haven't been trained well enough I really don't know but it shouldn't be acceptable that shoes go missing so often.Maybe a qualified farrier can tell us exactly what the issue is.The thing is how often does a horse win after it has been re-shod or runs unshod?

Yes terrible results today but it's happened before and will happen again. We can't win them all so we will just have to try another day but meetings like this don't do any good for the integrity of horse racing in South Africa.First race a 100-1 shot wins who is the stable companion of the odds on favorite.Race 2 the same stable wins with a 22-1 shot who was in need of the run.(No way am I questioning the Bass stable as I am sure that was their honest opinion as theses things do happen).Race 3 not the best placement of the favorite and not given the most vigorous ride to finish out the PA.Race 4 the favorite drifts from 5-10 to 16-10 and has to run unshod due to something wrong with it's shoes.Race 5 a six horse field and somehow the outsider of the field manages to get a big lead with the other jockeys falling asleep and she hangs on for the victory.Things like this are not going to bring new people into the game as they might see it as rigged and some people still in the game might just give it up altogether.I think I know better and say it is not rigged and just one of those days but there will be people who might disagree with me.
