Ken Nicol: Fillies made the three top prices on day one of the Bloodstock South Africa two-year-old sale held at Germiston today.
AUGUST 16, 2018
Lot 37 provided the early fireworks and eventual sale topper when an unnamed Pathfork filly consigned by Highlands Stud and out of the four time winning National Assembly mare Scented Samantha was knocked down for R1.2 million to Brett Crawford.
Scented Samantha has already produced a trio of Grade 3 winning sprinters in Dark Justice, Sweet Sanette, and Franny, as well as four other multiple winners.
Late in the day Lot 245 another filly moved into second, but a long way back price wise at R700,000. Field Maiden is by Gimmethegreenlight and out of Grade 1 winning mare Fair Maiden. Sent to the sale by Lammerskraal, she was snapped up by Heywood Bloodstock.
In third spot for R600,000 was Wylie Wench – from the first crop of Wylie Hall, and out of Grade 1 winning sprinter Enchantress.
First colt on the price list was Treasure Trove sent down by Wilgerbosdrift. By Flower Alley, he is the fourth foal of Rich Man’s Gold mare Treaj Pots, and was bought by Gavin Van Zyl’s Team G Racing for R450,000.
Earlier Klipdrif Stud’s filly and Lot 15 Chrome Gypsy had set the early benchmark when she fetched R400,000. The bay by What A Winter is a half sister to Grade 3 winning colt Punk Rocker and was purchased by Jehan Malherbe’s Form Bloodstock.
Leading sire by aggregate was Kentucky Derby winner Flower Alley, whose 7 lots made a total R1 490 000 at an average of R212 857.
In all 252 lots passed through the ring with an average price of R95,585, making a total of R17,970,000.

You've got to feel for breeders. This sale is an unmitigated disaster. 15% unsold so far, and this in reality will be substantially higher now that the Vendor buyback sales have disappeared ( I wonder why.....). I suppose that it is a sign of the times with less and less owners prepared to throw money down the drain in these pressing economic times. I was once told by a very prominent breeder a few years back that besides the service fees, it cost him R35000 to get a horse to a sale. Perusing the prices obtained, there wont be many breeders taking overseas jaunts this year.

OtA, Yes I feel very sorry for the breeders , but surely they must have known that they were living in a dream world for the last few years with inflated prices .
We all know how hard it is living in SA at the moment with such HIGH unemployment and lack of investment.

.....funny enough quite a number of them do not know the plight of the common man.....at the upper end of the pile they are truly flush..... could survive for decades....because they bought wisely sold more than most and have adequate investments outside of breeding and racing....

Muhtiman , What you wrote above is the key to financial success .
I was hoping that by investing my hard earned cash in Steinhoff shares I would also join in to that group of successful people .

6 years 9 months ago....looked a bit frazzled before going into the sales ring....but none the less fetched a fair price of R180K.....not bad in the current economic and horse racing climate....Muhtiman wrote: ...lot 273 ........this chap trots like a meneer....has a self awareness seldom seen in young horses....his ped suggests that he may...get a fair bit of ground....he is substantial in size and will

A real buyers market ... I didn't see any in the flesh, but on pedigree , the following must be real bargains if they have 4 legs
312 - Silvano colt out of a 1/2 sister to Vercingetorix - the cross produced Do You Remember - R110k only
322 - Gimmethegreenlight filly out of Goldkeeper mare - nice family - the cross produced Rose in Bloom and the dam a 5 time winner - R100k only
348 - Judpot colt out of a Fort Wood mare - 35k only
395 - Another Gimmethegreenlight filly out of a Fort Wood mare - 60k only
And these are just the ones that REALLy stood out to me
