ADDITIONAL REPORTS

ADDENDUM: MISSISSIPPI BURNING
SATURDAY 12TH DECEMBER 2020 : RACE 2 : WSB THANKS YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT CONDITIONS PLATE (F&M) : 1500M : Ref 242
MISSISSIPPI BURNING was scratched from her race on the 12th December as she was under medication (veterinary certificate received on 11th December). A second veterinary certificate was received on the 14th December stating that this filly is now fit to race. The 8-day suspension was lifted by the NHA veterinary surgeon.

So this information was out there for all to see - imo the people that are supposedly employed to provide the 'punting public' with this type of information (on-course presenters) should firstly have been aware of this (and it does not seem that Mr Elley was aware of this, as he was very bullish on MB winning) and secondly provide the 'punting public' with all relevant information; we all make mistakes, but to me personally the 'preview show' fell far short of what is needed - especially taking into account that this was one of the premier meetings of the Cape season

Ito of the trainer (and I don't know him from Adam :) ), hindsight is perfect sight, and I'm sure he wished he never ran MB on Saturday, but surely as a professional he was of the opinion that she was ready to compete in a race. And imo he did not deliberately 'misled the public' - in fact the did the opposite by highlighting the fact that she was scratched the previous week, in the interview; the fact that no-one thought to approach him earlier is surely not his fault; also the fact that he did instruct the jock to 'look after her' is imo what is expected of any trainer; yes it is a pity that MB had obviously not recovered from whatever ailment has plagued her, but who was to know before the race ?

Imo then as a trainer being "concerned" about the well being of a horse....you dont run them if not 100% sound, especially a horse as talented as MB....imo should never have run!!!

Let's consider a Trainer like Joey Soma. He kept the whole world updated on jockey arrangements for his horse in the July even before the field was finalized because he knew punters would put money on whichever horse Hewitson is riding.

Furthermore, he sent out a press release to everyone well in advance of the Summer Cup, once he saw that his horse was ante post favourite for the race, letting everyone know he was a very doubtful starter. Nobody "APPROACHED" him to find this out, he just knew what any logical trainer who wanted the best for the punters, the same punters the kept him in the game, should do.

I may not have appreciated it before, but I have a newfound respect for these trainers that go out of their way to keep the punters informed, Soma, Snaith, Ziets, Bass-Robinson, to name a few.

social media was abuzz with jockeys defending the cape crawl that was the guineas run on the weekend , seems as that the old saying about no honour amongst ........ is not true in there profession.

Definitely we appreciate the guys who do their bit to keep punters informed, but this was not the Summer Cup. In an ideal world, as punters we would like every trainer to have a website (or Facebook page) where their comments on their runners for the day are provided; not sure that will ever happen though.

And that's my last word on the subject

I actually feel sorry for young Marcus, he was certainly more naive than devious.

Think he was put on the spot at the last minute and wanted to be transparent.
I am sure he felt a lot worse than we did with MBs poor performance.

Would have to say I felt the Vet was more to blame, in addition our expert presenters should have made a point to obtaining the horses well being in advance, considering the background from the previous week.
