Well that just shows you DJ.
You cannot increase the pools if nobody is cared about our racing anymore.
You can have as many signed petitions as you want but if there is no punters it really means nothing.
Obviously a sad state of affairs but there is no trust in SA racing anymore and you really can't blame the punter for leaving.

I wonder if the clever people who critique pool sizes have noticed lately that there is severe inflationary pressure chipping away at disposal income and quite seriously so. It must be lovely to live in lalaland where the only variable beyond nought is one!

I have often mentioned that with our current unemployment levels that we may be chasing Rands that are not there? in addition the amount of open bets held by bookies are obviously a major concern for the tote.

Ha ha make us laugh nice joke. So the bookmakers are living in lalaland while they building another yacht? We’ve been in this game all our lives, and all our lives we faced what you call inflationary pressure. Just now you going to tell us also that the people never came to the racecourse it was empty because of the virus covid, right? But the rugby stadium was as full as it could get, right? Where you come from, lalaland? Don’t look for excuses to cover your pals in the jobs that they don’t know what they doing, they clueless. Okay. Especially what we have been exposed to last 6 months. We going to put the people we want in there very soon. Watch.

@JayPeg19,
Pool sizes have been declining for the past 2 decades and the recent and current inflationary impact on disposable income is not the reason therefor. The decline in stakes in real terms over the past 2 decades has less to do with inflation and disposable. The operators have failed to deliver a competitive and compelling product to its once captive market, which the bookmakers have captured.
The tote offering is well on it way to becoming obsolete in the short term. The dividends for Win and Place bets are ridiculous compared to bookmakers odds for both bets. Also, the exotic dividends leaves one feeling shortchanged when you compare the dividends relative to the actual result relative to the pool size.
Punters with options to bet with bookmakers will continue to redirect their spend away from the tote. THE TOTE HAS A REAL CHALLENGE TRYING TO ATTRACT CONSUMERS WITH AND OBSOLETE PRODUCT OFFERING.
4Q with no strategic plans to address this imperative is a lost cause. GC partnering with HWB is a smart move and it’s their saving grace as an operator.

You must realise that most people on ABC live in a parallel universe to the rest of us as money appears to be no object to them. You are spot on.

The REAL issue in horse racing is that every penny is "indispensable" income...

The only province which has some sort of racing ethos is KZN. There is certainly no ethos in Gauteng and consequently racing will die out there (here) and in the Cape. I can’t talk for Eastern Cape so I am not sure if there is a racing ethos there but I don’t think so. One day not too far away KZN will either be the capital racing province or the only province to race.

No doubt bad management caused attendance to drop over the last 15-20 years but to ignore 35.5% unemployment is insane...to get the true picture of a great deal of South Africa take a drive past a post office if you can find one and see the long lines waiting for the princely sum of R350 social grant...drive around to malls and towns and look at the empty shops and buildings(an office tower next to Eastgate - one of the biggest malls in Africa- is offering month to month rental just to get some occupation)....now if you think struggling people are going to rush into totes to maybe win a few rands at best instead of taking a lotto for dream money then you are dreaming.....if you expect new entrants to sit and learn the rules of betting just because you change the person on top you are dreaming....I loved the Circus as a child but I have no illusions that it is a novelty now...just like racing will become

Just another thought a liitle different to the title. Can anyone vision KZN breaking away from the Rebublic to form their own country? I can 😱.

I agree that many people are worse off financially - but some (enough ?) are still in a position to spend the leisure rand - I know Saturday's Gauteng meeting was something of a special case ito Pools, but if one can believe the figures quoted (I assume these have been audited ?) the BP reached a not too shabby Nett Pool of 360k +, the PA 700k +, and of course the P6 more than 6 bar; this tells me that there are still lots of 'spare cash' around; totally agree though that in order to entice these 'gamblers' to 'invest' more in horse racing and less in casinos and other 'spinning wheels', better plans, betting opportunities, incentives, etc have to be provided for the 'man in the street'; given the size of the Pools I do not believe that 'horse racing is dying' - not yet anyway. Cape Racing imo may more and more turn into a 'boutique' operation and for me might 'go it alone' in the future - not sure if there is enough people interested in racing down there (but I'm guessing); all in all imo there are plenty of reasons to be concerned, but the doom and gloom is probably firstly a bit over the top and secondly premature - just my opinion of course

The increased cost of living cannot be disputed. 10 years ago a liter of petrol cost roughly R12, this week we will pay almost double that.
However, In that time there has being significant growth in sports betting and lucky numbers. I have not noticed many casinos closing down. IMO gambling money should not be referred to as the leisure rand. We should not forget this is an addiction for most. A punter will always make a plan for money to gamble with, often with dire consequences. Ethics and morals aside, gambling money will always be available for any industry wanting to capitalize. This leads me to believe that the current situation is mainly due to poor leadership. The punters have not stopped gambling altogether, they have merely moved over to the bookies.
