Bob, HW need the product. They will make their money back comfortably over time. It's not that the product won't survive, we are talking about pool sizes.
How do you expect pool sizes to grow as things currently stand?

......still early days and much room for growth.....HW has some key people down there and they will soon identify opportunities to get set up with more well placed betting venues....but also draw more people to the race courses....
....as for pool sizes that is not their problem at the moment as 4Q runs the roost in that respect ...and they will never grow in that status quo.....however Cape Racing will be able to now get proceeds of the sales of bloodstock through their new thoroughbred division which is a source of revenue to go to their stakes pot...here already is an income stream that is a boost that does not like 4Q rely solely on tote revenue rake....Cape racing will of course still get their meagre rake from those dismal pools....but GC/TABgold may be able to revive their former tote arrangement with WC gambling board and form a "coastal tote pool" .....after all who would want to still be tied to 4Q who are currently floundering and only have their head above water through the cash of MOD....

Interesting that the sale of horses will add to the stakes pot.
WCape is the breeding province and the stakes will find it's way back to the prominent breeders so breeders will race some of their products too.
If anything UK owners will be targeted to own a horse down there, at the exchange rate it won't cost an arm or leg.
Cannot forsee any benefits for other areas like
KZN and Gauteng, unless they raid often which won't be the case.

There are too many unanswered questions with regards to the tote for too many years now. The best way to find new customers is if you have the 'old' customers providing a positive word of mouth, but that's never gonna happen as things stand.
Would you encourage your teenage kid to play horse racing?
Most of us got into the game when we were young and are still here 30 years+ later, but there's hardly any 'generational passdown' anymore.
Also, children were banned from racecourses 30 years and more ago. The 30yo’s+ today neither have a clue nor care about racing. That’s one reason they are not interested. The Nationalist Party dug the first hole for the grave.

I am 32 and bar my mate I taught how to play (he enjoys betting other sport) I have yet to see a person even close to my age that interested in horse racing, when I used to go to the tote or bookie I never once saw anyone younger than 50 to me its always seemed to be a "toppies" sport. The only reason I play is because when I was in my teens my late father and mate used to send me and my mates to take the bets whilst drinking at tattersalls at Shelly beach center in Margate. Over the years I have been to several Durban Julys as my birthday falls on Durban July weekend and I couldnt get anyone to have a bet they all just ask me what to do.
My suspicion is that as the years go on the pools will get smaller and smaller unless someone can find a way to make it as attractive to bet on as soccer or F1 or something younger folks are into, ironically I only bet on horses and dislike sports betting.
just my 2 cents

Pools will never grow, in fact, for as a long as there's the Open-Bet they will continue to shrink. The operators need to humble themselves, get some clever negotiators and find a way to share the pools with all the bookies. Otherwise they need to sell the tote to the bookmakers.
Unfortunately changing graphics, colours, music and presenters will not help. Punters are comfortable spending their money with the bookies. The small fraction that determine the pool sizes are slowly but surely shrinking.
Only this week they changed their arrogant stance on the Doubles, Pick3s and minimum stake but bookies have always allowed punters to take their bets anyhow they want.
The tote has always lacked executives who understand gambling instead they hire cronies who are out of touch with reality.
Why should I bet with the tote?

Let's suppose I wanted to take my bets now because I won't have a chance tomorrow. This is what I would get when login into my tote account:

Almost every time I unmute 240, I hear our presenters, begging the punters to spend more on the TAB pools. Usually early morning Aussie racing.
"Racing is in our blood, so we need to support the tote" "C'mon guys, we can do it." "Lets get those pools up" "Its payday, no excuses" "We need to get out of it with a trifecta"
LOL, So funny !!!!
The most recent & the one I enjoyed the most- "There is fantastic value available backing the even money fav on the tote for a place" (R4.50 at the time but 10 mins before racetime !!!)"
It paid R1 at racetime & ran unplaced.
At least I got a laugh.

Its time the tote held up the white flag. In the last 15+ years it has not provided any value & has always treated the punter unfairly. I dont believe the tote has ever considered the punting public & what they want. Remember the P6 couplings, new bets which cost plenty to market which lasted a month or so, etc etc etc
It needs to eat humble pie & do a deal with the bookies.
Punters are now more educated in betting opportunities on racing & sports, & have realized that the bookies open bets far outweighs the paltry tote offerings.

This reminded me what ever happened to betting world. they seemed to be working alongside the tote, havent seen them I assume they were bought over by another bookie.
The idea of the tote taking exotics and bookies taking open bets seems like a good idea but then one would still need two account at two seperate entities, perhaps they need to come to an agreement that bookies who take exotic bets pay 75% into the pool or something, all this being said its been mentioned by hundreds horse racing in South Africa may soon come to an end if U.K has had two horse fields for years we are seemingly screwed

.....Betting World was supposedly taken over by Betfred.....just had a gander at their local online site and they only show 6 branches in 6 provinces so some previous Bettingworld sites in the Cape are ideal for HW development should they want to increase the 10 odd venues they already have there....but should GC/TABgold get licensed in WC then they would want to have a few independent sites too.....![]()
