Breeder of the Year

I read in the Sporting Post that once again Summerhill Stud are already way clear of all the rest.

My question is:

How many of the mares on Summerhill Stud and used to determine stakes won are actually owned by them?

Good question, oscar, but surely also applies to other studs like Maine Chance, Highlands etc.?

like the trainers title oscar its purely a numbers game..

Not really. Studs like you mention do not have boarders or clients as a general rule. Summerhill has hundreds of residents, most are not owned by the stud.

Still, the horses have been born and bred at Summerhill and total accumulated earnings is the game and they win.

Anyway, how else can anyone compete with billionaires who own these studs if they didn't register small/owner/breeder boarders from their farms?

I have a couple of questions as regards this 'breeder of the year" award.

I hear what you say pirates but to be able to promote your stud round the world as SA Breeder of the Year carries quite a bit of prestige and therefore will certainly transfer into money at some stage.

What exactly qualifies a horse to be claimed by a stud as "their bred horse"?

Does the "closed' ready to run race stakes qualify as part of the stakes taken into account for breeder of the year?

As an example..if trainer A trains a horse for 8 months of the year and then trainer B takes over only the stakes earned in the 4 months for trainer B are taken into account for Trainer of the Year...so if a mare is with Stud A for 9 months of her gestation and then it moves to Stud B..why should Stud B claim the full stakes as their contribution to Stud of the Year.

Also if Mr X sends his mare to a stud farm and uses one of the farms Studs which could very well be owned by a third party..and Mr X sells the horse on the sale..why would that yearling be said to be bred by the stud in the book?

The breeder of a horse is the one under who's name the foal is registered.
This breeder is the owner of the mare at the time the foal is born.

How would the 'judges' know? (whoever those judges are).
The mares are registered by the NHA as owned by Summerhill.
Their foals are registred as bred by Summerhill.

So you'd have to ask Summerhill, not 'the judges'.
Why speculate?

This debate is going in a strange direction.
What exactly is the point?
That Summerhill for some reason isn't deserving of the title?
