Gitano Hernando sold to Chechen president
By Graham Green 3:38PM 21 MAR 2011 racingpost.com

CHECHEN president Ramzan Kadyrov on Sunday night completed the purchase of Marco Botti's Dubai World Cup hope Gitano Hernando in a deal thought to be worth about $4 million.

The successful negotiations with the five-year-old's owners began on Saturday and were conducted by English-based bloodstock agent Robert Harrison.

Gitano Hernando's triumph in the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita two years ago was pivotal in putting Botti on the map, and a condition of sale was that he runs for the Newmarket trainer at Meydan in five days' time before joining Herman Brown.

Bankable, another of Kadyrov's string formerly with Gary Moore, is now being aimed at the Dubai Duty Free, in which he finished runner-up a year ago.

Last year Kadyrov bought Queen's Vase winner Mikhail Glinka to run in the Russian Derby, but won therace with another of his string, North Stream.

Botti said: "I will be sad to lose Gitano Hernando because he is the stable star and has taken us all over the world, winning in America and Ireland, but he will still run for me in the Dubai World Cup. I am certainly very happy with him, and hopefully he will run well."

Harrison added: "My owner is passionate about racing and is looking to build a bigger string in England this year to go back to Dubai. A couple of them will be campaigned at the big meetings like Mikhail Glinka, who will be targeted at the Ascot Gold Cup."

Well, it now looks as though we do have a deal.

We signed a nondisclosure clause in our contract, so I won't be saying much, other than it was a very difficult decision to sell, as Gitano Hernando is coming up to the World Cup with a huge chance. He will be fit for the first time this winter and I expect him to go close if not win it. Twice Over has "bounce" (regression) written all over him, as he ran too big off the plane and now has had to spend a month in hot weather that's not used to. Bold Silvano was the horse to beat and now he's gone. If Musir is the one to beat, then Gitano will win it. I hope he does.

It is never easy to sell a good horse. Done it a few times, including with Crimson Palace. Not the most fun, but it is part and parcel of the game.

Good luck to Herman Brown!

Interesting view on Twice Over, also Cape Blanco is a good sort, imo I hope Kevin has the better one between Golden Sword and Musir.

Should be a good race and as one of my earlier posts lots of money on offer and no individual "star" to automatically collect :S

The Japanese horses can win when they are right, but they are difficult to judge.

Euroears was a late developing star that went wrong and has been resuscitated by Bob Baffert, who has an amazing record with aged sprinters. He is not bringing that horse over for the fun of it. Baffert, however, excells on dirt, not synthetic or turf tracks.

Cant understand why a syndicate manager would sell a horse like that..obviously the offer was too big to understand!
