I heard a story in a tote once from a guy wh had been racing for many many years, where a Jock was paid or threatened to throw a race on a hot Fav. Apparently it was before TV broadcasting. The Horse and Jock were leading easily up the straight and was going to win pulling up but the jock new what the consequences might be so he jumped off before the line.

Could be urban legend, could be fact but shows that there are many ways to skin the cat. (Read as manipulate a race result). Only a fool would be believe that racing is 100% straight 100% of the time.

Al I also heard that story but surely an urban legend jumping off a horse at the speed that they travel is very very dangerous and as the story goes he was in front at the time getting trampled by the rest of the field and bringing down horses would Im sure be a deterrent, also had this happened it would have been well documented

Fixing a race to win would be very difficult, but fixing to lose a race is easy

All I can say is that I once had a horses in a 5 horse race and we asked the jock to give it an easy race and he ran 3rd, we then asked him after the race do u think if you had tried to win, could you have beaten the 2 horses in front of u? He said " yes, but was not sure about the 2 behind"?

I agree with Titch fixing a race is almost impossible but fixing a horse is possible. trainers do 'hide' the ability of their horses in order to get better prices. even using the stable companion to mislead the crowd/bookies.

How do we define fix ? It only takes one person to be devious and maybe get the desired results. The infamous Sea Cottage saga is a true story that people where standing to lose big or win big, so whats the plan of action shoot to kill. Lucky the horse survives and wins the July the following year. Then we have Gavin Howes and Greenwood in the weights debacle. Willie Uys aboard a Brett Warren runner in another weights contraversy. I can remember Charles Laird not to happy with Willie Uys when riding National Manner in a PE Feature as Willie fell of the horse just after the start. Charles Laird phoned the Tellytrack studio to show his disgust.
