Unfortunately I followed the hype about Taipan and never included Variety Club, believing that he would not be around - o well try again next year :(

2012 CHAMPIONS SEASON CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE (CTC)

sponsored by GOLD CIRCLE

On Saturday, 09 June at Clairwood Racecourse, there was a total of 95 points up for grabs in the 3 feature races. In the Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, odds on favourite Variety Club (Var) put in another sterling performance over 1600m. In a small field of 5 runners, he was simply too classy for the opposition and WELL DONE to the winning connections, trainer Joey Ramsden, jockey Anton Marcus, breeder Beaumont Stud and proud owners Mrs I Jooste & Mr M Jooste. For his followers in the competition, Variety Club scored 25 points, the Rising Sun Gold Challenge being one of the four bonus races on offer. Second placed Castlethorpe (Not A Single Doubt) scored 14 points and third placed Pierre Jourdan (Parade Leader) scored 9 points, both horses running tremendous Vodacom Durban July trials.

The Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes attracted a competitive field of fillies and mares over 1450m. Trainer, Glen Kotzen saddled last season’s Equus Champion Juvenile filly, Princess Victoria (Victory Moon), who went off as the SAFTote favourite. She won a gutsy race and showed that her run in the Gr.1 South African Fillies Sprint was all wrong. Princess Victoria scored 14 points and will now be aimed at the Gr.1 Garden Province Stakes on July Day. Second placed Mombasa (Tiger Ridge) scored 9 points and third placed Frequent Flyer (Silvano) scored 6 points.

In the Gr.3 Cup Trail, the field was made up of many Vodacom Durban July hopefuls and for the majority it was a case of, “win it and you’re in”! The race turned out to be a fantastic result for trainer Sean Tarry and owner Mr C J F Van Niekerk when Gold Onyx (Black Minnaloushe) beat his stable companion, the remarkable 8 year old, Buy And Sell (National Emblem). Gold Onyx notched up 9 points for his victory and English Garden (Camden Park) ran a cracking race to finish third, scoring 3 points for his followers. Buy And Sell was not in the competition.

The next big point scoring opportunity is the Gr.2 Post Merchants, which will be run over 1200m at Greyville Racecourse on Friday 15 June (night racing).

After the second bonus race of the competition, the Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, only 19 points separate the top 100 in the competition. Compared with previous years at the same stage of the competition, this year’s renewal looks to go down to the wire!

“JJ THE JETPLANE” has been consistent throughout the competition and now leads by 1 point having scored with Variety Club and Princess Victoria over the weekend. “aiddon” , “Potomac2”

and “Brian Easthorpe 2” who shared fourth position last week on 114 points, scored a total of 39 points each over the weekend with their 2 selections that were successful in the Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge and the Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes.

The “big movers” last weekend were “Bana's Boy 7” who moved up from 53rd position to 5th having scored with Variety Club, Princess Victoria and Pierre Jourdan, and “Kipketer” who was on 94 points last week and out of the top 100, now in 8th position on 148 points having scored with both Gr.1 and Gr.2 winners and Castlethorpe.

In the Gr.2 Post Merchants on Friday the most popular result for the competition will be DEPARDIEU (Dupont) from the stable of Dean Kannemeyer.

On Friday (night), 15 June the Gr.2 Post Merchants 1200m was run at Greyville. Although a few of the “big” names from the sprinting ranks were missing, the race still attracted a quality field. In the competition the most popular result would have been the top weight, Depardieu (Dupont), who disappointed his followers when finishing sixth. The winner Mike’s Choice (Tamburlaine) and third placed Sports Coach (Jet Master) were not in the competition and only 9 points was scored for second placed, Rebel Knight (Jet Master) who finished in the same position last year.

Two horses that impressed over the weekend, earning a point each, were Gorongosa (Montjeu) and Happy Archer (Dubawi). The latter, a dual Grade 1 winner in the province, will next be seen on July Day in the Gr.1 Garden Province Stakes, a race she won in 2011 and Gorongosa’s main mission will be the Gr.1 Ladbrokes Gold Cup run on “Super Saturday” on 28 July.

The next big point scoring opportunity is the Gr.2 Betting World Derby and the Gr.2 Betting World Oaks, which will be run over 2400m at Clairwood Racecourse on Sunday 24 June.

The entire Leader Board can now be viewed on the Charity Turf Challenge home page.

This weekend’s results had little impact on the leader board. However, “aiddon” who was a point behind “JJ THE JETPLANE” last week managed to score a vital point with Gorongosa and now

ties the lead on 154 points. The only entry in the top 10 that has a runner this weekend is “Tracey” who is in joint 8th position on 148 points and will be relying on Taipan in the Betting World Derby. Otherwise, this weekend’s racing is a quiet one leading into the next crucial stage of the competition, Vodacom Durban July Day.

The leading horses by points of the competition thus far are:

2012 CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE by LEADING HORSES (18 June)

1. VARIETY CLUB 39

There was no spot prize draw over the weekend. So far, there have 12 winners in the computer generated lucky draw and the remaining amount of R4 000 sponsored by TAB GOLD “The Intelligent Bet” will be split between Vodacom Durban July Day and “Super Saturday”, featuring the Gr.1 Ladbrokes Gold Cup (4 winners each of a R500 telephone betting deposit).

On Sunday, 24 June the Gr.2 Betting World Derby and the Gr.2 Betting World Oaks were run at the Garden Course, Clairwoood. In the Oaks it was Tajmeel (Nadeem) that carried the hopes for many in the competition and she delivered smartly for her followers, scoring 14 points. Second placed Beloved Betty (Spectrum) scored 9 points and third placed Europe To Africa (Rock Of Gibraltor) scored 6 points. In the Derby, Taipan (Dynasty) and Tribal Dance (Tiger Dance) were the most popular selections in the competition. The latter was the SAFTote favourite but had to settle for second scoring 9 points. I t was Master Plan (Jet Master) that came through to win well, scoring 14 points and third placed went to Red Fort (Fort Wood), scoring 6 points.

Whilst this weekend is a quiet one for the competition the KZN Breeders race day at Greyville Racecourse on Sunday, 01 July promises to be an exciting race meeting with the feature race for graduates of the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, The KZN Breeders Mile, carrying a purse of R1 million.

Hoping for a good July Day, have the following runners all on one entry form :-

Blake
Beach Beauty
Jackson
Pomodoro
Gorongosa
Ilha Bela
Princess Victoria

My duds are Shea Shea and Europa Point - Tajmeel finally arrived, hoping they run her on Champions Day/Gold Cup Day if there is a suitable race for her.
Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.
