First of all, I applaud this ruling. It sends exactly the correct message to horseplayers (punters) and the general public that racing is trying to conduct the sport on a high level. People that complain about this are on the wrong side of the argument.
Craig, let me ask you this question, sir: in a maiden race, filled with all first-time starters, how does a bookmaker come up with such accurate odds? Is it information from trainers or jockeys? If not, where do they get their information? If it does not come from the inside, I will be STUNNED.
In light of what I have just written, do you think the new ruling has some merit NOW?

Barry they just price up stables and not horses...also breeding..but you will find that MDK Woodruff Tarry horses are always opened up short...I cannot agree with you regarding the banning of Bookmakers sponsoring Stables/Jockeys if there was anything untoward going on why would they need to sponsor a yard to get "favors" when they could do it behind closed doors so to speak...I think that it is a ridiculous ruling that can achieve absolutly nothing positive and needs to be readdressed and reversed asap

i must agree with the jockey club and god almighty, this is the right move to take. bookmakers can sponsor the industry by paying the correct amount of tax. finish and klaar!

Before there were totes there were bookmakers - Bookmakers are self-employed hence their ability to adapt while the Tote is a mismanged fund sucker that has done nothing good for racing in South Africa except introduce Sports betting to futher dilute the Racing Rand - Why should punters be restricted to only totes? Even the valiant Phumelela see the value of fixed betting hence Bettingworld.
And where is the evidence that bookmakers actually use there sponsorship to price up runners?

I wonder if this ruling will be challenged in the courts?

100% Flash Harry! I cannot and will not support people who steel from our Industry without putting anything back! Now they run to publications such as Sportingpost to put their one-sided story on the frontpage. Do they think we all are stupid and fall for their arguments? Our Industry will be much better off without them - point.
