The ability to take a horse to peak fitness on the training tracks is an art form that few trainers possess. Taking a horse safely to peak fitness and keeping him/her there weeds out the list even further. There’s also science involved but since the science side is near non-existent (in terms of trainer involvement) and comes down to being able to open a bag of ready-mix racing feed, we’re down to relying on the trainer’s training gift alone. The simple reality is that it all hinges on the natural born gift, the art and feel of understanding and being in tune with the animal. Without this, the trainer is just a pleb trying to play a musical instrument. He’ll be able to get a few notes right after years of practicing, but the master performance he’ll never understand nor deliver. And the same applies to jockeys and vets and anyone else working with animals. A gift is required in order to excel, and no amount of theory or practical experience can substitute this gift. Same applies to music and all other art forms too - must have geeft! And something else I've noticed over the years and this applies across the board; those without a natural born gift will often argue the very existence thereof.

Laff travels alot, that's his business, but if I were an owner I would,nt put a horse into a yard who,s trainer is always on the move, its not like he got mdk,s team back home to keep things going
Then again mdk got "lucky" and just happen to find good grooms, assistants and a racing family

Easy you like to stir whats it your buisness were Laff was or who looked after the horse.
a TRAINER is allowed a holiday annually and it happened to be this weekend.
i am sure Paul never expected the horse to win and came as huge suprise. He was at the track with a group of friends including i am sure his best mate Philip who has organised for the last 8 years the annual Dubai WC trip.
You are stiring up SxxT FOR NOTHING.
Leave LAFF the owners and what you would do out of it.
Its great to see Natal horse smaller yard winning for a man putting big money into the game.
NB the 3 year olds this year look weak.

Lserato so you dnt believe in luck? Are you saying that every trainer in sa can travel a team of horses for 9 months in quarantine and get 15 winners and 40 odd places in dubai in a single season?

There is always more than one side to every story. My old man was on course today with Mike, Laffs assistant, to watch Ladbrokes Lass run, who said they were gobsmacked with the comments as they have emails from Mentor saying the horse doesn't stay and must be withdrawn. They insisted they keep it in the race. Maybe somewhere between both sides is the truth. :S

"Luck" is a term that the racing operators use to try to detract ppl from going to the casino,if the operators are saying to the the punters that racing is a thinking mans game of skill, how can any trainer say " eish I'm so unlucky mdk, ramsden, tarry, bass, woodruff, drier, van zyl are just lucky to get good horses?"
The leading trainers main owners are astute businessmen, does anybody believe that they choose ppl to train horses worth millions based purely on the fact that they may have got lucky and trained a few winners?

It seems that only in Horse Racing that some believe success is based on Luck - Is the student that studies his whole life to get into Med school and becomes a top doctor also just "lucky" - Sure you need the horse but what you do with it when you have it determines whether you succeed or not - Reality is a cruel master but to believe that luck is the main reason why a certain Jockey, Trainer, Bookmaker or Punter is better than his peers over an extended time period is just an excuse for your own inadequacy.
Many years ago there were no percentage bets and a few punters I knew complained that they could not win big because they could not afford the "big" perms that the big punters were taking. Those same punters still complain but now it's because racing is rigged and crook... No, hard work and an astute mind is what you need in any thing you do be it punting, cooking , dealing etc. I spend so little time studying a card nowadays and I see those results - The more info you process and structure that info the more you win in any area of life(as long as you are realistic and don't want to be an NBA player when you are 5ft4 in your kicks)

Racing will always have a lot of differing opinions and that is an important aspect of the game and gives it it's appeal and worthwhile markets.....otherwise every favorite would be 1/10.
HOWEVER:
The theory that the ability of all horses is different.....but of all men is the same? ........doesn't wash.
Maybe Trainers and Jockeys should be merit rated too.....wouldn't that be interesting?...........lol

If they merit rate trainers kzn will be a dumping ground as they support mediocrity with their restrictive "we were in the shit now we got money so stay out cos we dnt want you to take it" rules lol
