Also remember Mike Azar (I think his cousin or son or something posts here, West Cigar). anyway this dude walks into Bruma tatts with two fanny packs full of cash. There was a first timer filly owned by the lady, her name escapes me trained by Robbie Sage. i think the horse was by National Assembly out of a family that Sally Abrahams ran.

Anyway he put R10k with each booky, bet it down from about 12's to about 3 or 4 to 1 I think. (12 bookies, they all laid him a price even Len Smart :) )

She won easy.....

Good times :)

years ago my father was big pals with a Dr Khoury who had horses with Hennie van WYK, as a matter of fact Rhys won his first race for Dr Khoury and his father he actually won his first two races for his farther
he won the 3rd and 4 th races that day, my father told me they cleaned out the book makers I do not have the exact sum but between them and a couple of other people in the stable they collected in the hundred of thousands on the double, apparently Hennie was lining up the two horse for months and then brought his son up from the academy in to ride them, so Rhys first tow rides for his farther were both winners
I member my dad got home that day and he had money in every pocket packs and packs of R10 and R5 notes

he was also pals with Eric Rowan and they all were on Gatecrasher and had quite a number of duplas with Distinctly we all know what happened

One day at Germiston we were standing at the top of the ramp leading from parade ring to stands, Hennie came past and he told my dad that Royal Bride wil not lose National Sprint he won @ 20/1 my farther had R10000 on 5 book makers on course laid R2000 with each of them I helped him get bets on
My farther was a medical rep at the time and he was supplying medicine to Jean Barnard, Hennie and Alec Uzent plus a few other trainers I do not remember, after his death they still were phoning home to try and get from the medicine.
he completed his practical as a pharmacist but never went to university but he knew his medicine and pills used to read the Mims all the time to keep track of new medicine
apparently he made some syrup trainers gave the horses and it worked well, I am not sure if it was doping or just some stuff to improve the horses overall condition but all i know it worked
I also remember the day Straight Eight won his maiden on Germiston Jean told my father horse can not lose I knew he had couple of thousan on but cannot remember odds won by 6 lengths
can tell lots of more stories but matbe I bore you
read on another tread that they want to write a book about I think I can add some stories myself :)
also the story about an old timer will ot mention name who wanted to pull a big fav to ran second but misjudged horse ability and fighting spirit and won the race jockey lost thousands he was on the horse who who ran second byr was suppose to win.B)-

This is definitely a thread for us senior citizens ( so GB and Shrek you are excluded...:P)....

I definitely remember all the above as well as Hymie Tucker ( among the biggest punters). The Van Rensburg brothers, Tilly Wilmans,
Was at Scottsville the day Balaminos came in a disguise , but was picked up by security and evicted. He then stood at the fence giving cash to a few of the lads to go and punt for him......

I happened to meet Ronnie H in the tatts at Randburg about 10/12 years ago. .......after his little " stint" in the UK....B)....Said to us he was new to the game and asked how the pick6 worked!.....:D

Don maybe that's why a few of us have " racing's allure" because of some of those memories!!!

Seeing the name Late Alec Uzent , the stable had a huge punter called Jack Kahn who was fearless with his horses that he owned... the old Newmarket trainers were a close knit force to be reckoned with.

Titch........the Van Rensburgs owned the curry tavern in the Carlton in the 70's ( Dad was Elma). The 2 sons Mike and Gary where huge lads .They would " raid " Durban occasionally and had the pied piper following. I was with them in 1973 at the Cape Met. They had hundreds of thousands on In Full Flight at 8/10...................ran third. Eventually they gave up racing and went into drag racing at Tarleton.
I think (?) Jimmy van Rensburg the snooker player was also related to them!....

The most interesting factor imo about all these hard hitters was not the studying of form, but inside info on horses well being , jockey and or trainer input. and then fire.(tu)
