In 1992 an associate of mine had a horse called Father Hayes, well let me correct myself.
He's dad owned it,man named Anthony Gleeson. It was trained by Will Pearce. Now Pearce had terrible financial worries and was deep in the mire.
They planned a coup at least 12 months prior to it running at Sandown Park, now Gleeson had already landed a monster punt with a horse called
Rotherfield Greys,i think it won The Schweppes Sprint or The Big sprint at Glorious Goodwood,so he knew what he was doing.
It was on a Friday, and our instructions were to place ew bets at every bookmakers on The Uxbridge Road from Southall into Acton.
Father Hayes was a 25/1 chance,so the bets were around £30 ew,to keep it under the grand payout.I think in those days, anything over a grand was phoned through to head office.Me and he's son managed to hit the price at more than 20 shops.
The son told me there was at least another 50 like us doing the same thing, when it went in a bit in price,Mr Gleeson started having large bets on
he's own accounts over the phone.
By early afternoon,Father Hayes was 5/2.With a nice ticket in my pocket,we went to Sandown Park to watch it run.
It drifted out to 4/1 come race time, but it hit the front from the start and lead the whole way in a mile and half Handicapp, winning by 3 lengths.
The jockey was Dandy Nicholls and when he hit the line,he was out of the stirrups giving it big celebration.
Nicholls used the money to start training,Father Hayes never won another race,Gleeson was counting the money.
I think the story is on a betfair forum..The shocking part though, was 2 or 3 days later the trainer put a shotgun to he's head and pulled the trigger.
Bobby Beasley took over the training, but the fairy tale was soured by poor Pearces desperate state of mind.

I bought Sonic Gang from Marlon when he imported it, but when my business went down in 2009 I did own some money on the horse so unfortunately I had to give it back as I could no longer afford it, I think the horse won 5 races, when I bought the horse from Marlon he told me that it will win 5 races.
I actually bought 4 horses from him and the only other one that won was Gentle Star.
I have the utmost respect for Marlon he has always treated me with respect even when I could not keep my commitment to him due to my situation. I must also mention the advise he some times gave me was always spot on, he surely knows his sport
Every year over Christmas he would have a present delivered to my home via courier. Unfortunately I lost his number when my cell phone was stolen would like to have his number if anyone can perhaps PM me with that..
