If not tested, not a confirmed case...
There are many people who are asymptomatic hence not tested and will not form part of the official stats...all it does it depress the denominator and make the mortality rate high for the purposes of justifying the harsh rules in place...
We need(ed) to protect the most vulnerable and let the rest get on with living...
A life lived in fear is a life half lived...
Take care fellow Clanners...stay safe and healthy...

Well, the CDC ESTIMATE for H1N1 was 60-65 million got the virus in the US alone...so current WORLDWIDE ACTUAL cases of 16.3 million is comparatively low...

Active cases 170537 an decrease of (3050) since yesterday.
Recoveries 274925 an increase of 9848 since yesterday.
Deaths 7067 an increase of 298 since yesterday.
Total world 656649 increased 4215 since yesterday.
Consider the following ;
SA has had 7067 deaths over the 124 days an average of “57” per day .
UK with similar population had 45759 an average of “369” per day.
It’s taking a long time for these averages to level off, or cross/match but the experts say it will happen.
RIP

Re: COVID - 19 Daily Update Stats:

The problem with all of the Covid statistics is that they only reflect confirmed cases which requires that a test be done. In most countries the number of active cases is thus hugely under reported, and even the death numbers are under reported.
In countries where there are good death reporting systems, it is thus critical to track the weekly number of deaths which is generally a very stable number, and one can then see the excess deaths which are largely attributable to Covid 19.
In the UK the difference between excess deaths and reported Covid deaths is relatively small once they started including non hospital Covid deaths into their reported numbers. Their reporting systems are very good.
In SA the base number of deaths runs at around 9000 per week with roughly 8000 natural causes and 1000 other causes. By the middle of July the SA excess deaths from natural causes reached 6000 per week. This compares to the current COvid reported deaths of around 1400 per week. Some of these excess deaths can be attributed to other causes which are indirectly caused by the Covid crises where people with other conditions avoid clinics and hospitals for fear of Covid or because the facilities are crowded by Covid cases and people fail to seek the necessary treatment. However, it is fair to assume that the majority of the excess deaths are directly attributed to Covid and hence the under reporting is very significant.
Deaths from accidents etc ( non natural) are down due to less driving, less industrial and mining activity and less violence due to lockdown and alcohol ban, hence one must look at deaths from natural causes separately.
Since the beginning of May when the deaths started to ramp up, we have reported some 8000 Covid deaths to end July, whereas the number of excess natural causes deaths was 22000 to 21st July and thus will be close to 30000 by end July.
We have reliable death reporting systems, particularly compared to other middle income countries.
It is thus very likely at end July that some 2m people have already contracted the disease rather than the 500k reported having tested positive and that cumulative Covid deaths are at least 25000 and not 8000. The good news is that recoveries are probably in excess of 1m to date.

Thank you Peter and always concerned about the stats but felt the only real measurement would be deaths, but that also appears to be hidden ?
The deaths reported in SA yesterday was 148 taking us to 8153
Uk are on 46193
Average UK 358 daily
SA is 63
🙏
