Depends on the pitch and the swing

It's best to bat 2nd - except for the Proteas - for them it's better to not bat at all::o

Seriously though, the majority of pitches found on the sub-continent will get slower as the game goes on (making batting more difficult), plus bowling in the evening gets more difficult if there is dew around (the ball gets wet and slippery and it does not 'swing') - so the better option in most cases is to bat first. Of course the problem in batting first is you don't know how much is enough.

In test cricket, it is also the norm to bat first - in general the pitches detoriate to such an extent that batting last (on the 5th day) is a problem; my dad used to say (and he might have stolen the phrase from someone else): if you win the toss, 99 times out of a hundred you bat first; the other time you think about it a bit, and then still bat first.

There you are - now you know a bit a about cricket strategy - now if you can establish why 4 different South African teams have choked in 4 World Cups, you won't need to bet on the game - you can just sell your services to the SA Cricket Board

I see Graeme Smith went to see his chick in Ireland... Apparently she's a swallower and not a choker:D

Frodo

regarding SA chocking in the West Indies against Australia in 2007 does wash with me. They were blown away by the Aussies.

I agree C&C, i was refering to the general comments floating around that 'the Proteas are chokers' - suggesting that ALL Protea teams have always been chokers
