Kentucky Derby Saturday

I know that Derby fever is not nearly as fever pitch in South Africa as it is here but I wanted to open a thread and see if anyone has any early fancies for what surely will be THE MOST OPEN DERBY IN DECADES!!!!!!

A bit of sad news this AM is that Toby's Corner (Graham Motion) has been withdrawn due to an injury. He was to be shipped to Churchill today. I believe Graham Motion's other fancy, Animal Kingdom (Team Valor) is already at Churchill Downs.

Uncle Mo put up a super gallop just the other day which would have some to believe that he is over his recent small set back and that he might even start Derby favorite? Not for me as I have said all along I don't believe he is a 1 1/4 mile horse. (I will accept the egg on my face gladly!)

Dialed in is the other horse vying for favoritism. He is a strong closer but his form lines are not quite as strong. He did win the Florida Derby which was won by his owners big 3 year old of last season, Ice Box. He went on to finish 3rd in the Derby. His owner believes that Dialed In is a better horse than Ice Box so he has to have a chance?

Other front line horses are Archarcharch who won the Arkansas Derby by a neck over the strong closer, Nehro. Of the two I prefer Nehro over this distance and he should be involved.

The field I think will be declared tomorrow so I will try and publish the filed, jocks and ML when I can!!

TOMMY WHATS your view on a horse called the factor ?

He is a dour front runner who shows tremendous pace. For me he can hardly go two turns let alone stretch out to a 1 1/4. The Derby is usually run at a solid gallop and a premium is placed on horses who can see out the distance, at least that's how I see it.
For me he will turn out to be a much better 1 turn horse, maybe up to a mile. He has talent but not for me at this level over this distance.

Tommy is it the only Derby run over 1 and a 1/4 mile as all others mile and a half?

Shame on you Scotia , what about the cape derby ?

Sure the french Derby is over 10f as well?

There are very few distance races here in the States so I guess the 1 1/4 miles here is a true derby, even though the Belmont Stakes is run over 2400m

well went I was to school over 50 years ago, we were always told that the "traditional" derby distance was 1 and a half miles...lol

I'm with you Dave.........next thing there will be a 7 furlong Guineas .....mind you the french,the yanks or the Capeys'.....don't bet against it .......lol

Tommy ,we don't get enough data to make a really informed choice but,if I am awake at racetime,I will have a little each way interest on Archarcharch....the few Youtube replays I found,showed this horse kicking well on the turn,and that has worked in some previous years,by stealing a march....but it will only be a nibble!
