LOL... just been watching the Molly / De Kock interview.... they cross back to the studio and Gareth says 'Mike De Kock, someone I rate one of our better trainers'.... brought a big smile to my face. Slight understatement young Pepper !!!

Gareth I see you were quite involved in the summerhill r23 sale, is all well with your solo bloodstock venture? Is there anything you bought that looks promising?

@badcompany

I am getting there. It is not easy to start on your own and so far its going well, I have some lovely owners and clients and the future looks good. The trainers I deal with have been very good to me and have assisted in every way possible.

I saw one of my purchases on Tuesday and he looks like an early forward type. So i am holding thumbs that they do well for their respective owners!

I am also pro-zimbabwe. The benefits of sending horses there are terrific. Training fees are between 400-600 us dollars a month, the stakes are in us dollars and also you have a great variety of local and SA jocks that go up.

After all they have been through, they are definitely on the up and it is the perfect place to send a horse that is in its place, or maybe just below the best in SA. Feature races can be worth as much as US$50 000, so it is worth taking a chance, and the racing fraternity up there are so kind and welcoming, once you have attended a racemeeting at Borrowdale Park, you will be hooked (just like I am) It is simply an awesome place to have horses (that also are cared for extremely well and get evrything they need) and on racedays, owners, trainers, breeders, friends and general horse racing enthusiasts all race together and have a great time.

Well said, Gareth. I started my racing "career" in Zimbabwe, where mercifully there were none of the age restrictions that applied on racecourses as they did in SA back then, and I'm delighted that they have somehow managed to keep the show on the road.

I admire your guts for taking the plunge into the bloodstock field. I've had people telling me for years that I should give it a try, but I've never had the b@>:D

We pay £1400 a monthTraining fees,which in Rand is about 18000.That is with a trainer not based in Newmarket,they are more expensive.On top of that you have vets bills,fuel costs,jockeys fees and entry fees.I think you need 4 wins in moderate races to break even over the year.But if we were in it for profit we wouldnt own horses,its for the love of it.
It does sound good where you are Gary.Keep it up.

what exams qualifications or license do you have to have to become a bloodstock agent and is there an authority in place to control and police bloodstock agents ?
