Strange tote movements

Did anybody notice today the pools on 4th race at Lingfield. There was a huge amount wagered on the place pool, far in excess of the win pool. The favourite was 1/6 and most of the money was on the favourite for a place.
Just before the off the fav was paying 30c a place and everything else was paying R 10 or more a place approx. Lo and behold the fav wins and the place dividends were R1, R 2,1 and R 2,4. More problems with those bloody aussies stuffing up the co-mingling ? There was something seriously going on in the place pool and it would be interesting to hear the official explanation.

Gajima, the tote guarantees a minimum place payout of R1. When a horse is paying less than R1 a place the other placed horses dividends are adjusted so that the total payout is the net pool. The odds display we all see do not show these adjusted dividends and therefore the other horses dividends can drop significantly when they are declared. Hope that makes sense.

I agree with NAgboy,
This is the truth. The tote does guarantee that no horse shall pay less than R1.10 a win and R1.00 a place.
How the calculations are done I'm not sure but I know for a fact it is done.
Don't think there was crookery involved. (This time LOL)

Guys, when playing races from the UK, be careful as in most instances the dividends shown on the tote are not paid. Instead these are adjusted to the tote pay-outs from the UK...

nagboy i disagree with your statement.race4 kimberly on monday the fav in awe when the pools were closed was paying 50 cents a place which resulted in the 2nd favourite at 3 to 1 e fuel paying 4.60 A PLACE..saftote certainly dont guarantee a min of 1.oo rand a place

The favourite didn't place though, Pirates. It might have been showing 0.50, but had it actually placed it would have paid 1.00 and the other placed horses would have had their payouts reduced to compensate. At least, that's the way I think it works.

I am fully aware of how the dividends are adjusted. However, there was clearly something happening in this place pool as the pool was excess of R 50k and approx double the size of the win pool. There was clearly no hope of a positive return on a place on the 1/6 fav yet the money poured on. For the place to be paying 10/1 bar the fav indicated there was clearly something unusual in the pool yet they continued to reflect these incorrect estimated dividends for at least 10 minutes prior to the race. I am not saying there were shenanigans going on, just something very strange. Perhaps someone was trying to inflate the pool and had bet a place on the 2nd or 3rd fav as an open bet. Well worth a look from the tote side.

Speaking of wierd tote movements. In Race 2 at the Vaal a minute before the off 8 Annamoona was paying R0.70 and 10 Mandulo paying R2.50 at the off Annamoona was paying R1.50 and Mandulo R0.60. The pool increased from approximately R25,000 to over R50,000. Surely one sizeable place bet was put Mandulo, but if so the person putting this on should know a big bet into a small pool affect the place pool dramatically and push Mandulo to less than R1 a place.

Pirates, In Awe did not run a place therefore no adjusting of the place dividends was necessary.

Gajima was it the size of the place pool or the changing of the other horses place dividends that concerns you? I have explained the reason for the dividends changing. The size of the pool I can't help you I am afraid and personally never heard punters complaining the pool was too big.
